Maryville's rules and Maryville's help

Is finding a preceptor Maryville's job or mine? Yours first. Maryville puts the search on students and keeps approval with program administration, and its placement assistance is a fallback for when your own search stalls. See Maryville's placement assistance.
Who can precept a Maryville NP student? A board-certified APRN, MD or DO with a clean license in the state of practice and a year or more in practice. For PMHNP students, Maryville also accepts an LCSW or someone with a PsychD or a psychology PhD.
Can the NP I see for my own care precept me? No. Your own provider is excluded, and so are family members, anyone you report to or who reports to you, coworkers you work beside and anyone who evaluates your work.

What our service covers

What do you actually do? We find a preceptor and site that match your practicum course, screen them against Maryville's rules, and prepare the request package for Exxat. If a preceptor drops, the search starts again.
One practicum or all three? Either. Some students want help with one course; others want all three planned. The written quote names the courses it covers.
Who stays in touch with Maryville? You do, with our preparation behind you. The Exxat request, your compliance and your messages with faculty and the Maryville Online Clinical Team come from you, so your record is yours.
Do you work with DNP-NP and post-master's certificate students? Yes. Both take NP practicums, and the search works the same way; tell us the course that's next.

Exxat, paperwork and approval

Who submits the Exxat request? You do, from your own account. We gather the preceptor's details, the license and certification proof, and the site information first, so it goes in complete.
What if my preceptor isn't board certified? Maryville may still accept them through a Preceptor Exception Form, which the Program Coordinator decides. We flag that before you ask anyone.
Who handles the site agreement? The site signs Maryville's MOU or uses its own contract, which replaces it. We find the person at the site who handles agreements and put their details in your request.
Who gives the final approval? Maryville, at each of its steps. Our job is a request that arrives complete and matched to Maryville's rules, so reviewers have what they need on the first read.
How quickly does the search start? As soon as you accept the written quote and terms. A placement advisor plans backward from the day your practicum opens and keeps you posted as candidates are screened.

Timing and location

When should I start looking? Ideally before your Exxat access opens, roughly 3–4 months before the semester your first practicum falls in. Maryville's six starts a year set the calendar; the clinical timeline works through it.
Can I do clinicals in my home state? Usually. Maryville describes clinicals completed locally, but two states stand out in the June 2026 licensure grids: New York for every NP track, and Louisiana for every track but FNP.
Will I ever need to go to St. Louis? No. Maryville's online nursing programs are built to run without campus visits.
What if I move during the program? Maryville wants your RN license unencumbered wherever you see patients. Before clinicals in a new state, update your address in Self-Service and get licensed in that state.

Virtual hours, cost and commitment

Can my clinical hours be virtual? Only if your course and faculty approve it. Maryville publishes no telehealth or simulation rule; see virtual clinical options.
What does placement help cost? Each quote is built for your placement. Six factors shape it, from your track to how the site handles its agreement, and it reaches you in writing before you commit.
Does sending the form commit me? No. You commit only by accepting written terms.
Does Maryville charge for its placement assistance? Its public pages list no separate charge. The fees and expenses section of the Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center is the place to confirm for your program.

When a placement goes wrong

My preceptor dropped out. What first? Let your course faculty and the Online Clinical Team know in writing right away, and get the hours you've done logged and approved. Then tell us and a new search starts. Preceptor dropped out covers the rest.
Maryville declined my preceptor. Now what? Read the comments on your request in Exxat and fix the specific gap; preceptor not approved walks through the usual reasons.
I'm behind on hours mid-term. Talk to your course faculty early, not in the final weeks. A second approved preceptor can sometimes close the gap; see behind on clinical hours.
My Exxat account was locked mid-term. Stay away from clinical until it's cleared. Maryville requires any time logged during a lapse to be done again, and showing up for clinical in that state is a breach of the site contract.

How early should I get in touch before my Maryville practicum?

Ideally before Exxat opens for you, about 3–4 months before your first clinical term begins, or earlier if your track needs a setting that's scarce where you live. Later is still workable: we search on shorter runways too, though each week you lose narrows the choice of preceptors who can be approved in time.

Can I use Maryville's placement assistance and your service together?

Yes. They don't conflict, and a qualified name from either route is worth having. Tell Maryville and us what the other is doing so no clinic is contacted twice about you, and keep your own outreach going until a request is approved in Exxat.

What happens if my preceptor drops out mid-term?

Maryville must approve any replacement, so your course faculty and the Online Clinical Team hear first. Then tell us: a placement advisor starts a new search for a preceptor who fits the same course and stays on call until the replacement is lined up. Keep your logs complete meanwhile; they record the hours already done.

Do you help PMHNP students with the psychotherapy side of their hours?

Yes, it's part of the search. Maryville accepts PMHNPs and physicians as prescribing preceptors and, per its 2026 blog, an LCSW or someone with a PsychD or a psychology PhD for PMHNP students.
