Maryville's online RN-to-BSN: the clinical work it asks of a working nurse

The program in numbers

Maryville's RN-to-BSN counts your license and prior study toward a 122-credit bachelor's degree. The program page and the 2026-27 catalog break it down like this.

To be admitted you need a current, unencumbered RN license in the U.S., an associate degree in nursing or a nursing diploma, and a 2.5 GPA. There are no campus visits: Maryville describes the coursework as 100% online.

How much of the rest you still need depends on what you transfer in, which your advisor works out with you. That credit review, more than any clinical requirement, decides how long the degree takes.

Where clinical work shows up

Two of the required nursing courses mention hands-on work. Maryville's program page says NURS 330 Individual Assessment features lab experiences, without describing them. The catalog gives NURS 416 Public Health Capstone 4 credits and says it includes “group and individual clinical experiences”, with community work centered on family case management.

The other required nursing courses, six in all counting the choice between NURS 412 and NURS 414, are didactic. The catalog lists no separate clinical or practicum course for the track, and Maryville publishes no hours for either NURS 330 or NURS 416.

Why there's no preceptor search here

Maryville's graduate nursing programs run on a defined placement path. Students arrange a preceptor, submit a site and preceptor request in Exxat, and wait for four approvals before the first clinical day. None of that appears anywhere in Maryville's public material for the RN-to-BSN, and the capstone description doesn't mention a preceptor.

The size of the task is different too. Each NP concentration carries 750 clinical hours across three practicums, while the RN-to-BSN has no published hour count at all. If you have been reading about the NP search on forums, the placement process page shows what that path involves, and why most of it won't apply to you.

That doesn't mean there is nothing to arrange. Should your capstone section want you to set up an individual experience with a local agency, you will need someone there to say yes. That is a smaller job than recruiting a board-certified nurse practitioner, and your course faculty decide what qualifies. Take this as what Maryville's public pages show, not a promise about your section.

Pace, start dates and your capstone term

The quickest finish Maryville quotes is one year, or three semesters, depending on how many credits you bring, and even so it usually recommends part-time study. The program page invites you to start in fall, spring or summer and also lists the six 2026 start dates Maryville uses across its online nursing programs; the start dates page has them.

For a working nurse, the capstone term is the one to plan around. Group and individual experiences take time that coursework alone doesn't, and Maryville doesn't publish how much. Once your advisor tells you which term the capstone falls in, check your work schedule against it and ask faculty early how the experiences are scheduled.

Moving fast shortens the gap between starting and the capstone. On a one-year plan, it can arrive within months of your first course, so read the syllabus the day it opens rather than in the first week of class.

Which states the RN-to-BSN covers

Maryville's June 2026 BSN licensure grid marks all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands “Meets”. American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are “Cannot determine”. The grid is titled for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and doesn't say whether it covers the RN-to-BSN completion track.

The NP grids that mark New York and Louisiana “Does not meet” don't apply to this program. Maryville's older state authorization status page, though, last modified in 2020, says it can't enroll New York or Washington students in “our online nursing program”. Whether that still stands, and whether it reaches the RN-to-BSN, is unverified. If you live in either state, confirm with an enrollment advisor before you apply.

Your RN license is the constant. Maryville's admission rule asks for a current, unencumbered license in the U.S. without naming a state, and the licensure for clinicals page covers licensure questions in more depth.

What Maryville doesn't publish for RN-to-BSN students

The program is well described at the level of credits and courses. The clinical details are thinner, and these are the gaps worth knowing about before the capstone.

• Hours for NURS 416 or NURS 330. Neither the catalog nor the program page gives any.
• What the NURS 330 lab experiences involve, including whether any happen in person.
• Who arranges an individual capstone experience, and whether the organization needs any agreement with Maryville.
• Term length. Current program pages don't state it.
• Whether the BSN licensure grid covers this track.

Your course syllabus in Canvas is the first place to look, then your course faculty, then your advisor. Ask Maryville, the university's help center, is useful for general student questions; the specifics for your section come from faculty.

Where our help fits, if at all

For the RN-to-BSN itself, you probably don't need a placement service. Maryville publishes no preceptor requirement, and your faculty set the terms of the capstone. Where a section does leave you to find a community partner and you don't know where to start, a placement advisor can name a few local organizations worth contacting and help you draft the message. That is the extent of it, and your faculty decide what counts.
