NURS 416 Public Health Capstone: clinical experiences in the RN-to-BSN

What the catalog says about NURS 416

The 2026-27 catalog entry for NURS 416 Public Health Capstone is short. It describes content “applied in community settings with an emphasis on family case management,” says the course is for the RN, and states that it “includes group and individual clinical experiences.” It carries 4 credits and lists NURS 406 as a corequisite.

That is the whole public description. It gives no clinical hours, no list of settings, no preceptor requirement and no statement of who arranges the individual experiences. The rest of this page separates what those words tell you from what you still need to find out.

The phrase to hold on to is family case management in community settings. It points toward community and public health work with families, not a shift on an acute care unit, and it tells you what kind of organization an individual experience is likely to involve.

Where the capstone sits in the RN-to-BSN

The online RN-to-BSN totals 122 credits. Maryville awards 40 credits for a valid RN license, requires 30 credit hours to be taken at Maryville, and the catalog lists 25 credits of required nursing courses for completion. Coursework is “100% online” with “no campus visits required.”

The track ends with the capstone. Besides NURS 416, the required nursing courses are NURS 307, NURS 309, NURS 330, NURS 341, NURS 342, NURS 406, and NURS 412 or NURS 414. Those other courses are didactic, apart from NURS 330 Individual Assessment, which Maryville's program page says features “lab experiences.” That leaves the capstone as the place where the track's clinical experiences sit.

Maryville says the degree can be finished “as quickly as 1 year,” or in as few as three semesters depending on transferred credit, though part-time study is typically recommended. Group and individual experiences: questions for week one

The catalog names two kinds of clinical experience but explains neither. Your NURS 416 syllabus in Canvas and your course faculty are the authority on how they work in your section. Read the syllabus as soon as it opens and look for answers to these:

• Is there a required number of hours or activities, and how are they documented?
• Do you arrange the individual experience yourself, or does the course assign it?
• Which community or public health settings count, and who approves your choice?
• Does the organization need an agreement with Maryville, or a contact who signs off on your time?
• Are any health, immunization or background clearances required before you go on site?
• How do the group experiences run: with classmates, with faculty, online or in person?

If the syllabus leaves any of these open, ask the course faculty directly and keep the reply. Changing an arranged experience is easier early in the term than in its last weeks.

No preceptor search, as far as Maryville publishes

Nothing in Maryville's public RN-to-BSN material describes a preceptor requirement, an Exxat site request or the approval path its graduate programs use. The catalog lists no clinical or practicum course for the track, and the NURS 416 description does not mention a preceptor.

That is a real contrast with Maryville's nurse practitioner programs, where preceptors are “arranged by students and approved by program administration” and, since Spring 2024, each concentration carries 750 clinical hours across three practicums. Confirm this for your own section rather than relying on the absence of a public rule. If your faculty do ask you to line up an individual experience with an agency, you will need a contact there, which is a much smaller task than recruiting a nurse practitioner preceptor.

Not the same as the on-campus BSN's public health clinical

Searching for Maryville's public health clinical can turn up NURS 401C Required Clinical - Foundations of Public Health Nursing. That course belongs to the on-campus, pre-licensure BSN in St. Louis, not the online RN-to-BSN, and it is one of a set of required clinical courses in that program.

The on-campus BSN names regional clinical partners such as Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children's Hospital, SSM Health and Mercy Hospital. The online RN-to-BSN has none of those clinical courses, so don't read the on-campus requirements as yours.

You also start from a different place. Admission to the RN-to-BSN asks for a current, unencumbered RN license in the U.S., and the program awards 40 credits for a valid license. The RN license page covers licensure questions.

What isn't published, and where to check

The places to check, in order: the NURS 416 syllabus and announcements in Canvas, your course faculty, then your advisor. Ask Maryville, the university's knowledge base, is worth a search for general questions.

• Clinical hours for NURS 416. Not stated in the catalog or on the program page.
• Any practice-experience requirement for the degree. None found in Maryville's public sources beyond the capstone description.
• Clearances. The School of Nursing lists health and background requirements to meet before required clinicals, but the public pages don't say whether they apply to the NURS 416 experiences.
• Using your workplace. Maryville's on-the-clock rule was stated for NP practicums. For the capstone, ask before you plan around your employer.
• Licensure scope. Maryville's June 2026 BSN licensure grid marks every state “Meets” but does not say whether it covers the RN-to-BSN.
