How a clinical site gets approved at Maryville

The site is its own decision

Two of Maryville's four pre-clinical approvals are about the site. The March 2025 approvals article lists official Exxat approval of your site and preceptor request, and, separately, clearance from the site's education department or manager. The first is Maryville agreeing the site works for your course; the second is the site agreeing to take you.

Behind Maryville's side sit the questions about the location itself: does the setting suit your practicum, is there a contract with Maryville, and is the site in a state where Maryville can place you. The site's side covers its own onboarding, badges and any screening beyond Maryville's list. Neither side stands in for the other.

The welcome page for admitted students says Maryville sends a list of qualifying site types in the semester before your first clinical course. That list, and the current version in the Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center, is your reference for your track.

Does the setting fit your course?

Setting is the first test, and it differs by track. Maryville's course descriptions and a 2023 webinar give the clearest picture:

The webinar lines date from 2023, before the 750-hour curriculum took effect in Spring 2024, so check your course guidelines for anything newer. The course-by-course detail starts on FNP practicums and continues for each track.

What Maryville needs from the site

Maryville needs a contract with the site before you train there. Its standard document is the MOU, also called the affiliation agreement, kept in the Resource Center. A site with an agreement of its own can use that instead, and its contract then takes priority. The details, including who at the site to ask, are on the MOU and affiliation agreement page.

The site also has to be somewhere Maryville can place you. On its June 2026 licensure grids, New York shows "Does not meet" for all five NP concentrations, and Louisiana shows the same for every track but FNP. An older status page, last modified in 2020, says Maryville has no authorization to place clinical practica in New York. Your own RN license has to be good in the clinical state as well; see out-of-state clinicals.

It helps to enter the site in Exxat exactly as it names itself on its contract, so the request and the agreement clearly point to the same place.

What the site needs from you

The site's clearance is the third approval, and hospitals and health systems in particular add steps of their own. Maryville's January 2024 onboarding article notes that some sites run their own onboarding, and it names two tools for them: the OnBoarding Information List and the Onboarding Request Form. Sites can also ask for more than Maryville does. A March 2025 article covers sites that want a newer background check or drug screen, which you reorder in Exxat. Maryville's 2026-27 catalog notes nicotine screening at some Missouri hospitals and says COVID vaccination may be required at some clinical sites.

Your dress follows both sets of rules: Maryville's white lab coat and professional dress, and the site's own code. After final Exxat approval, ask whether the site wants a Maryville photo ID.

What sinks a site

Going by Maryville's published rules, these are the problems that stop a site:

• Wrong setting for the course, such as a hospitalist service for an FNP practicum, or a primary care office with no psychiatric provider for PMHNP.
• No contract: the site won't sign Maryville's MOU and has no agreement of its own to offer.
• A state Maryville can't place in, or one where your RN license isn't valid.
• Your employer, on the clock: a 2023 webinar allowed your workplace only without a conflict of interest and never during paid time. See clinicals at your employer.
• No qualified preceptor on site: the location is only usable with a preceptor who meets Maryville's rules.
• Onboarding that can't finish in time for your course start.
• A compliance lapse: a June 2026 article says a non-compliant Exxat account puts the placement "On Hold."

What Maryville doesn't publish about sites

There is no public list of approved or already-contracted sites for online NP students. Maryville's on-campus BSN names clinical partners such as Barnes-Jewish Hospital, SSM Health and Mercy Hospital, but those are placements the school arranges for its campus students. Maryville also doesn't publish how long a new contract takes, whether one contract covers several students or terms, or the request deadline for a new site. Under the older eValue system there was a "priority request deadline," but its dates never appeared on a public page.

The login-only Resource Center carries the qualifying site types, onboarding information, deadlines and forms, and the 2026 blog says it is updated each semester. Check it for your track, then put specific questions to the Online Clinical Team with the site's name and address.
