Maryville clinicals across state lines: licensure grids and state rules

What the June 2026 licensure grids say

Maryville publishes state-by-state licensure grids on its Professional Licensure Information page. The current set is dated June 2026 and covers four programs: the MSN, the BSN-to-DNP, the DNP with an NP concentration and the post-master's certificate. All four grids show the same pattern for the five NP tracks.

The post-master's DNP without an NP concentration has no grid, since it doesn't lead to licensure. A separate BSN grid marks every state “Meets” and the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and American Samoa “Cannot determine,” but it doesn't say whether it covers the online RN-to-BSN. The older 2020 page, and where it conflicts

Maryville still hosts a State Authorization Status page whose metadata says it was last modified in September 2020. It agrees with the grids on New York and Louisiana, but not on Washington or Oregon.

The grids are newer, but the older page is still live, and neither says which reflects current enrollment practice for Washington and Oregon. If you live in either state, get Maryville's answer in writing before you enroll or plan a clinical there. The same 2020 page says Maryville takes part in NC-SARA and may place students in clinical practica in SARA states.

State boards add their own rules

Maryville's grids are one layer. The state where the clinic sits may impose conditions of its own on out-of-state programs, and those follow the placement, not your home address.

• New York: except at federal VA and Armed Forces facilities, NYSED makes online and out-of-state nursing programs hold registration or approval before any of their students starts a clinical rotation in the state.
• Louisiana: before an out-of-state program offers clinical experiences in Louisiana, the Board of Nursing must approve it.
• Washington: out-of-state distance programs need Board approval before placing students, and the Board says approved placements are for Washington residents. It began rulemaking on those rules in December 2025.
• Oregon: according to the Board's APRN FAQ, placing students doesn't require its approval for out-of-state APRN programs; the older prior-authorization rule was repealed effective July 1, 2021.

Other states, California among them, have their own approval rules for out-of-state NP programs. Whether Maryville holds a given state's approval isn't in the sources we checked, so ask Maryville before you commit to a site across a state line. Your RN license has to match where you see patients

Maryville's rule follows the clinic, not your home. Per the admitted-student welcome page, students must hold an unencumbered RN license for whichever state their patients are in. If your clinical site is across a state line, your license has to be valid there.

Moving mid-program triggers two steps on that same page: change your address in Self-Service, then obtain a license in the state you've moved to. Moving into a state where your track is marked “Does not meet” is a bigger question, and Maryville doesn't publish what happens to enrolled students then. Ask before you move, not after.

Your preceptor has a parallel rule. The February 2026 Maryville blog says preceptors must hold an unencumbered license for the state they practice in, so check the preceptor's license for the state the clinic is in. License details for students are on RN license for clinicals.

Compact licenses: what they cover and what they don't

The Nurse Licensure Compact can save you a second RN license, within limits. If your home compact state issued you a multistate license, it covers practice in the other states that have implemented the compact. By NCSBN's records, 40 states have it in effect, Missouri among them since January 2018.

It doesn't reach everywhere. Nine states are not members. In the West: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada and Oregon; in the Midwest: Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota; and in the Northeast: New York. Massachusetts, which has enacted the compact, is aiming to implement it in May 2027, so it isn't in effect there yet. For clinicals in any of those states you need that state's own RN license, and NYSED says plainly that New York practice isn't covered by another state's multistate license.

The compact covers RN licenses only. A separate APRN Compact has been enacted by five states (Utah, Wyoming, Delaware and the two Dakotas), but it isn't operational until seven states enact it, so it won't simplify your NP license after graduation yet.

Before you plan a clinical across a state line

1. Check the clinical state on the current gridOpen the June 2026 grid for your program on Maryville's Professional Licensure Information page and look up the state where the clinic is, not just your home state.
2. Look for an older conflictIf that state is Washington or Oregon, ask Maryville which statement applies to you now.
3. Confirm your RN licenseMake sure you hold a license valid in the clinical state, directly or through a multistate compact license.
4. Confirm the preceptor's licenseLook up their license for the state the clinic is in, not where they live.
5. Ask Maryville about the placementBefore you commit, ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team to confirm that your track can be placed in that state.
