Maryville NP clinicals in Washington: two answers and a board rule
Maryville's June 2026 licensure grids mark Washington “Meets” for all five NP tracks, but a Maryville status page last modified in 2020 says it can't enroll any Washington student in its online nursing program. Washington's board separately requires out-of-state distance programs to be approved before placing students there. Confirm with Maryville before you plan a Washington clinical.

Maryville's grids and its 2020 page disagree
Two Maryville documents give opposite answers for Washington, and both are still online.

The grids are six years newer, but a newer grid doesn't prove the older statement was withdrawn. Ask Maryville which applies to you now and keep its reply. Washington's own approval rule, below, may be part of the story; our research can't say how. Out-of-state clinicals shows how the grids treat other states.
WABON approval for out-of-state distance programs
Washington's rule for distance learning nursing programs from other states is WAC 246-840-571. Such a program needs WABON (Washington State Board of Nursing) approval first; without it, none of its students may begin clinical or practice experiences in the state. It applies and demonstrates standards equivalent to Washington's; once approved, it keeps its national accreditation, oversees and evaluates the students it has in Washington, and reports to WABON every year. WABON's list of approved programs includes MSN, NP and RN-BSN tracks.
Approval comes with a residency limit: WABON restricts approved out-of-state placements to Washington residents and decides any exceptions case by case. Our research doesn't record whether Maryville or your track is on the approved list, so check it and raise it with the Maryville Online Clinical Team. On December 5, 2025, WABON also started rulemaking on its education rules, including clinical placement barriers, so the details may change.
WABON ties approved placements to Washington residency, so a student living in Portland can't assume a Vancouver clinic is open to them.
Who can precept, and the grant your preceptor can't claim
AANP rates Washington full practice. Washington's rules for ARNP students line up closely with Maryville's: a preceptor must hold an ARNP, MD or DO license that is active and unencumbered, or another state's equivalent, and can't be the student's relative or personal friend. The friends clause goes further than Maryville's published list, so leave friends off your shortlist. A Washington ARNP license is also required for faculty from out-of-state programs who teach ARNP practice in the state.
The legislature created the Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, and WABON runs it. Eligible preceptors with a year of experience, whether ARNPs, RNs or LPNs, receive a payment for each student they take. Programs based outside Washington are excluded, WABON says, even if the clinical hours are in Washington, which means a preceptor who takes you as a Maryville student can't claim it. Mention that when you ask a preceptor.
License, metros and systems
January 31, 2024 is when Washington implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. Your compact home state's multistate RN license now covers clinicals there, though Maryville still expects that license to be unencumbered. Washington hasn't enacted the APRN Compact. Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue dwarfs the rest, with about 4.2 million residents in 2025 Census Bureau figures; next come Spokane-Spokane Valley, the Washington side of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro, and Kennewick-Richland. Among the large systems are UW Medicine, PeaceHealth, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, MultiCare Health System, and Providence, which includes Providence Swedish. They're starting points for your search, not sites we're claiming take Maryville students.

Once Maryville confirms it can enroll you and place you in Washington, we search Washington for a site and preceptor suited to your track, then help you pull together what Maryville reviews. Until then, you're better off with that answer than with a preceptor who can't be used. Maryville approves every placement.

Does Maryville accept nurse practitioner students who live in Washington?
Maryville's own pages conflict. The June 2026 grids mark Washington “Meets” for all five NP tracks, while the September 2020 status page says Maryville can't enroll Washington students in the online nursing program. Only Maryville can settle which applies to you, so ask admissions or the Online Clinical Team and save the written answer.
Can I do Maryville clinicals in Washington if I live in Oregon or Idaho?
Be cautious. Under WABON's position, an approved out-of-state placement is open only to Washington residents, and exceptions are reviewed case by case. That limit sits on top of Maryville's approval and the program's own WABON status. If a Vancouver or Spokane-area clinic is your closest option, ask Maryville early whether it can be used. Will my Washington preceptor get the state preceptorship grant?
Not for a Maryville student. WABON's reading is that out-of-state programs fall outside the Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant, and hours logged inside Washington don't change that. Maryville also says it doesn't pay its clinical preceptors. Tell a prospective preceptor this up front; it's better they hear it from you than find out later.
Are Washington's clinical placement rules changing?
Possibly. WABON's CR-101 notice, filed December 5, 2025, started rulemaking on WAC 246-840-500 through WAC 246-840-571, with removal of clinical placement barriers within its scope. The approval and residency conditions in place now stand until any new rules are adopted. Check WABON's education page before each term and confirm with Maryville.
