Maryville AGPCNP: finding an adult primary care preceptor
Maryville's Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP prepares you for patients 13 and older, and all three of its practicums sit in outpatient primary care. You need a board-certified APRN, MD or DO who sees adults and older adults, for 750 hours in total. The track is closed in New York and Louisiana, and Exxat, where your requests go, opens about three to four months before your first clinical term.

AGPCNP at Maryville, in brief
The AGPCNP is one of five NP concentrations in Maryville's online MSN. Coursework is 100% online with no campus visits required, and clinicals take place near you. The degree totals 47 credits, a 29-credit core plus an 18-credit concentration, and Maryville's time estimate matches its FNP: 20 months at the fastest if you study full time, 28 to 32 months part time.
Maryville's AGPCNP landing page lists six entry points a year, in January, March, May, July, August and October, and the MSN page gives exact 2026 dates; the next is October 19, with an October 9 application deadline. Maryville describes the track's population as patients 13 and older, and the practicum descriptions center on adults and older adults with chronic and acute problems.
The three AGPCNP practicums
AGPCNP clinical time runs through three 3-credit practicums, each with a classroom partner. The first two are the same catalog courses FNP students take; the third belongs to the adult-gerontology track alone.

The three together hold 750 hours, and Maryville publishes no per-course split. If your admission dates from Fall 2023 or earlier, your plan may lack NURS 627C; a 2023 webinar gave that older version 580 hours. Moving to the current plan is a request you make to the Office of Academic Records.
Who can precept an AGPCNP student
Maryville's baseline is the same as for other tracks: the preceptor holds an APRN, MD or DO credential and board certification, practices on an unencumbered license and has a year or more of experience. For this track the natural fits are adult-gerontology primary care NPs, family NPs whose panels are mostly adults, internal medicine physicians and geriatricians. PAs and CRNAs don't typically qualify, according to Maryville's 2026 guidance.
Keep the setting outpatient. Maryville told applicants in 2023 that its primary care tracks need a primary or preventive care setting, "nothing hospitalist", which rules out inpatient hospital medicine even though the patients there are adults. Because the AGPCNP doesn't need children, an adults-only internal medicine office can carry all three practicums, something FNP students can't count on.
Maryville indicated in 2023 that an AGPCNP student can keep one preceptor from term to term. That makes the first ask bigger: request all three terms at once, knowing each practicum still needs its own approval. The relationship rules apply too, and preceptor requirements lists who is ruled out.
Admission, and the job you already have
The admission bar is the MSN standard: an accredited BSN, a GPA of at least 3.0, a year of professional nursing experience and an active, unencumbered RN license in the US. The catalog says applicants should currently be working as registered nurses, so you arrive with an employer and a network, often in adult care.
That network is your first search list, with limits. Maryville's 2023 terms for an employer site were a role without conflict of interest and clinical time outside your paid shifts, and paid hours don't count. Maryville's 2026 guidance also rules out your supervisor, a direct report and anyone who evaluates your work. An adult clinic in your health system but outside your own department may be the cleaner option; clinicals at your employer explains why.
States: closed in New York and Louisiana
Maryville's June 2026 MSN licensure grid marks the AGPCNP "Does not meet" in New York and Louisiana and "Meets" everywhere else it lists. If you live in Louisiana and want a primary care NP track, the FNP is the one Maryville concentration the grid marks as meeting requirements there. The same pattern appears in the grids for the post-master's AGPCNP certificate, the DNP-NP and the BSN-to-DNP.
A State Authorization Status page last modified in 2020, still live, adds a Washington note: it states that Washington residents can't be enrolled in Maryville's online nursing program, while the 2026 grid marks Washington "Meets". Its Oregon restriction covers other tracks, not the AGPCNP. Ask Maryville to confirm before you enroll, and keep your RN license valid in whichever state you see patients. Where adult primary care placements come from
Adult primary care happens in many kinds of practice, which widens your search. Sites worth a look include:
- Internal medicine offices, independent or owned by a health system
- Geriatric primary care practices and clinics built around older adults
- Community health centers with adult medicine providers
- Family practices where most of the panel is adult
Health systems usually put students through a central process. In Missouri, for instance, SSM Health asks provider students to find an SSM Health provider first and then submit its online Student Clinical Placement Form, and says a request is not a promise of a placement. Treat that as an example of the pattern, not a sign that any system hosts Maryville students.
If you're approaching a Missouri physician, know that the state's preceptor tax credit covers physicians and PAs who precept Missouri medical and PA students, not NP students, so it won't apply to precepting you. The tax credit page explains who qualifies.
Timing for a three-term adult placement
The AGPCNP clock starts well before NURS 621. These are the markers Maryville publishes:
- A semester ahead: a packet from Maryville arrives with preceptor qualifications, the site types that qualify and database setup steps.
- About three to four months out: Exxat access opens, and your compliance items and site and preceptor request go in there.
- Before day one: four approvals, from Exxat Compliance, the site and preceptor request, the clinic itself and course faculty.
- All year: your TB test and flu shot renew annually, and any lapse puts the placement On Hold.
If one practice agrees to host all three terms, ask for each term's dates in writing now, and keep a backup for NURS 627C, the practicum older plans don't include. The clinical timeline has the full countdown.

Questions Maryville students ask
Should I choose AGPCNP or FNP at Maryville if placements worry me?
The choice rests on more than placements, but the tracks do ask different things of a site. Both take NURS 621 and NURS 624; the FNP then needs a family and pediatric practicum, while the AGPCNP's NURS 627C stays with adults. An adults-only practice can fit every AGPCNP practicum. Weigh the certification and the patients you want to see too.
Can I do AGPCNP clinicals in a nursing home or long-term care facility?
Maryville's public pages don't name long-term care either way. What they do say is that primary care tracks belong in primary or preventive care, with nothing hospitalist. Before you plan around a long-term care site, ask course faculty whether it fits the practicum you're in, and describe the setting and patient mix plainly in your Exxat request.
Can a geriatrician precept a Maryville AGPCNP student?
Yes, if they meet Maryville's baseline: a board-certified MD or DO with an unencumbered license where they practice and at least a year of experience. The practice should be outpatient primary care rather than a hospital service. They also can't be a relative, your supervisor, a direct work colleague or your own doctor. Maryville reviews every preceptor in Exxat.
Does Maryville visit AGPCNP clinical sites?
Maryville's public pages don't describe faculty site visits, in person or virtual. Grading, per Maryville's page for admitted students, combines your preceptor's evaluation with faculty input, and faculty set the final grade. In older Maryville guides, preceptors also signed off time logs and filled in an NP Student Evaluation near each rotation's end.
Does the Maryville AGPCNP have a capstone project or thesis?
No. In a 2023 webinar, Maryville said its MSN programs are clinical-based, with no capstone project or thesis at the master's level. Your last stretch is the third practicum, NURS 627C, taken with NURS 626. If a project interests you later, Maryville's DNP is built around a scholarly project instead.
