Maryville clinical timeline: when to start and what comes first

The short answer: before Exxat opens

Your search should be underway before Maryville asks you for anything. An April 2025 Ask Maryville article says Exxat access comes approximately 3–4 months before the first clinical semester begins. That is when the site and preceptor request goes in, and a request needs a name in it.

Maryville's older advice went further. A 2023 MSN and post-master's webinar recommended that applicants already have a likely preceptor in view while applying. Few students manage that, but it shows how much lead time Maryville expects a search to take.

Anchor your plan to your first clinical semester. For most NP students that is the term of the first practicum, such as NURS 621 for FNP and AGPCNP or NURS 641 for AGACNP. Check first whether NURS 612 makes an earlier term your first clinical one, as explained below.

The countdown, in Maryville's order

Here is the sequence as Maryville's public pages describe it. Maryville doesn't publish exact request deadlines, so the table shows order rather than dates.

Six starts a year, and what they change

Maryville's program pages list six 2026 starts, from January 12 to October 19, for the MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP and RN-to-BSN. With that many entry points, your first clinical term depends on when you entered, so a classmate's timeline may not match yours even in the same track.

Two caveats apply. Older concentration landing pages give PMHNP and PNP only three entry points a year (in January, May and August), so confirm your own track's calendar. And a 2023 webinar said students may start in 8-week sessions, with 16-week sessions once they move into clinical and concentration courses. Current program pages don't state term lengths, so check your dates in Canvas.

The courses that come first

Every first practicum sits behind three courses: NURS 611 Advanced Pathophysiology, NURS 615 Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics and NURS 612 Advanced Health Assessment. Online, NURS 612 lists 611 and 615 as prerequisites, so the usual order is those two, then 612, then your first practicum.

NURS 612 carries its own clinical component. An April 2025 Ask Maryville article says students in NURS 612 who have all approvals may start clinical in week 5 of the semester. Because that start depends on approvals, plan as if the 612 term is your first clinical semester, and ask your advisor to confirm.

Some tracks add a step. PMHNP students take NURS 660 before NURS 662, and PNP students pair NURS 650 with NURS 655C. The sequence is covered on NURS 611, 612 and 615.

What Maryville doesn't publish

The public pages leave the hardest dates blank. Missing are the deadline for submitting a site and preceptor request, how long Exxat review takes today, and how many terms ahead Maryville wants names.

The only public clue comes from the eValue years. A 2023 Ask Maryville article described a first-come, first-served queue at its busiest from a “priority request deadline” up to the semester start, and said anything submitted by that deadline was handled before term began. It never printed the dates.

For current dates, look first to the Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center, the student-only site Maryville says covers deadlines and forms. Your Canvas course and the Maryville Online Clinical Team are the other places to ask.

A working plan, counted back from day one

This is our planning suggestion, built on Maryville's order of steps; adjust it once you know your real request deadline.

1. Two terms outBuild a list of possible preceptors and sites, check licenses and board certification, and start asking.
2. When the clinical packet arrivesRead the preceptor qualifications and site types, and drop anyone who doesn't fit them.
3. When Exxat opensFinish compliance items and submit the site and preceptor request with a preceptor who has already agreed.
4. The weeks before the termFollow up on the site's clearance, the agreement and any onboarding, and watch each approval in Exxat.
5. Day oneStart only when all four approvals show, then keep compliance current through the term.
