Maryville PNP: finding a pediatric primary care preceptor

The PNP program in brief

Maryville's catalog calls this concentration Pediatric Primary Care; its online pages call it the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner track. Either way, coursework is fully online, Maryville requires no campus visits, and clinical hours take place near you. The MSN totals 47 credits, 18 of them in the pediatric concentration and 29 in the core.

Two scheduling details are less settled than for other tracks. Six 2026 start dates appear on Maryville's MSN pages for all programs, yet an older PNP page lists three yearly entry points: January, May and August. Maryville's PNP program page is the place to check the current time to finish; a 2023 Maryville webinar said the MSN runs seven or eight semesters depending on the concentration. Ask your enrollment advisor both questions before you plan practicum terms.

Three pediatric practicums

PNP clinical time sits in three 3-credit practicums, and the first one differs from every other Maryville track: it opens with health promotion rather than diagnosis.

Maryville's catalog adds NURS 655C for students starting in Spring 2024 or later, the same term the track moved to 750 hours. The older PNP plan, which a 2023 webinar put at 850 hours over three semesters, was the highest of the five tracks. No per-course split is published for either.

The pediatric preceptor and practice

Maryville applies its usual preceptor test here: an APRN, MD or DO holding board certification, at least a year of practice and an unencumbered license in their state. For a pediatric track that points to pediatric nurse practitioners and pediatricians first. A family NP or family physician also meets the credential rule, but the practicum descriptions name pediatric primary care practice settings, so ask course faculty before you submit a mixed-age family practice.

The setting is the stricter test. Maryville said in 2023 that pediatric placements, like FNP and adult primary care ones, belong in primary or preventive care with "nothing hospitalist". An inpatient pediatric unit doesn't fit, however much pediatric experience it offers, and anything else hospital-based is a question for faculty before you ask a preceptor. NURS 655C in particular centers on the well-child visit, which happens in the office.

The relationship limits carry over too, so family members, your manager, people who report to you, close coworkers and your own clinician are all out. Preceptor requirements covers the exception form for a preceptor who isn't board certified.

Admission, and a hospital nursing background

You'll need the standard MSN credentials to get in: an accredited BSN, a minimum 3.0 GPA, a year's professional nursing experience and a current US RN license with no encumbrance, and the catalog expects current RN employment. If that experience is on a pediatric hospital unit, it prepares you for the patients but not for the placement, since your own unit can't host a primary care practicum.

Your employer's outpatient pediatric clinics may be an option under Maryville's employer rules: no conflict with your present role, no clinical time while you're on the clock, and no preceptor who supervises you, works directly with you or evaluates your work. Paid hours never count toward the 750. Clinicals at your employer covers the conditions.

Where the PNP is open

Maryville's June 2026 licensure grid marks the PNP "Does not meet" in New York and Louisiana, while every other listed state and territory reads "Meets". The post-master's, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP grids follow the same pattern. A Louisiana nurse who wants pediatric patients has one Maryville NP option there, the FNP, which the grid marks as meeting requirements.

Maryville's 2020-era State Authorization Status page, which is still up, puts Oregon on its list of states closed to PNP enrollment and says Washington residents couldn't enroll in the online nursing program. The 2026 grid marks both "Meets", so ask Maryville which applies before you apply, and keep its answer with your records. Where pediatric primary care sites come from

Look across several kinds of pediatric practice rather than one:

• Independent pediatric offices and pediatric group practices
• Pediatric primary care clinics owned by health systems or children's hospitals
• Community health centers with pediatric providers
• Family practices with a large pediatric panel, if faculty agree the mix fits

Children's hospitals often run formal intake for APRN students. In St. Louis, for example, St. Louis Children's Hospital routes APRN student requests through its Department of Clinical Education and weighs application completeness, faculty approval, the student's skills, program type, unit fit and preceptor availability; its page mentions about 60 graduate nursing students a year. That describes one system's process, not an opening for Maryville students, and a hospital unit wouldn't fit a primary care practicum anyway. The useful question for any system is whether its outpatient pediatric practices take NP students.

In Kansas City, Children's Mercy's clinical placement page covers undergraduate nursing and doesn't describe an APRN process, so ask its education office directly. St. Louis and Kansas City sites covers the region's other systems.

Timing: the first practicum comes early

NURS 655C requires NURS 612 and runs alongside NURS 650, so your first pediatric practicum can follow Advanced Health Assessment directly. Find where NURS 655C falls on your plan of study and count back from there.

• The semester before: Maryville sends preceptor qualifications and qualifying site types, and Exxat access opens about three to four months ahead of your first clinical semester.
• In Exxat: compliance items first, then the site and preceptor request under the course wishlist.
• Before the first well-child visit: all four approvals, including the practice's own clearance and course faculty.
• Across all three terms: keep TB, flu and every other item current; a lapse puts the placement On Hold, and hours logged during it must be repeated.
