Maryville PMHNP: psychiatric preceptors, therapist options and sites

The PMHNP program in brief

Maryville's PMHNP is an online MSN concentration, taught 100% online with no campus visits required; your clinical hours happen near you. At 50 credits, a 29-credit core and a 21-credit concentration, it's the longest of Maryville's five MSN tracks. Maryville's PMHNP page gives about 20 months full time and about 28 to 32 months part time, although an older landing page said as few as 32 months.

Start dates need checking. Maryville's MSN pages list six 2026 starts for every program, while an older PMHNP landing page names only January, May and August as entry points. Your enrollment advisor can tell you which applies before you plan practicum terms around it, and before you tell a psychiatric practice when you'll arrive, and online starts sets out the full calendar.

Three practicums, three populations

The PMHNP's hours sit in three 3-credit practicums. A 2023 Maryville webinar gave each term a different population, and the current catalog descriptions line up with that outline.

Together they hold 750 hours, with no per-course figure published. NURS 662 also needs NURS 660 Psychopharmacology and Advanced Mental Health first, one more course than other tracks put in front of their first practicum. Who can precept: prescribers, and the LCSW, PsychD or PhD option

Maryville's 2026 preceptor guidance lists who can precept a PMHNP student: a PMHNP, an LCSW, or a clinician with a PsychD or PhD in psychology, alongside the physicians and APRNs who qualify in every track. Every one of them still needs a clean license in their state and a year or more in practice, and none can be a relative, a manager, a coworker you work with directly or your own clinician.

The two kinds of preceptor do different jobs. Maryville's 2023 webinars said prescribing preceptors are physicians or PMHNPs with psychiatric prescribing authority, while part of the required psychotherapy time could sit with counselor-type clinicians, subject to the PMHNP coordinator's review. A plan that satisfies both sources puts a psychiatric prescriber at the center of each practicum and adds an LCSW or psychologist for therapy hours once the coordinator agrees.

Settings that fit, and two that don't

Maryville's 2023 guidance ruled out two settings for PMHNP practicums: retail clinics, and primary care practices without a psychiatric provider. Settings worth approaching for a psychiatric practicum include:

• Outpatient psychiatry practices, private or owned by a health system
• Community mental health centers and behavioral health agencies
• Inpatient psychiatric units and psychiatric hospitals
• Child and adolescent psychiatry clinics, for the second practicum
• Therapy or psychology practices, for psychotherapy hours with an approved non-prescriber

Whatever the setting, your request should say who prescribes there and which population you'll see, since the 2023 rules turn on those two points. Telepsychiatry needs its own answer. Maryville hasn't published a rule on telehealth hours for any NP track, so ask course faculty before you count on a virtual placement; virtual clinical options covers what can count.

Admission and state limits

Admission uses the MSN criteria: an accredited BSN, a 3.0 GPA or better, one year of professional nursing and an active, unencumbered US RN license; the catalog also expects you to be working as an RN. If that work is in mental health, your employer can be a site only when you're off the clock and your preceptor isn't a colleague or manager.

Maryville's June 2026 licensure grid marks the PMHNP "Does not meet" in New York and Louisiana. An older status page, last modified in 2020, also lists Oregon as closed to the PMHNP and Washington as closed to all online nursing students, though the 2026 grid marks both "Meets". Confirm with Maryville if you live in either state, and see out-of-state clinicals for licensure in the state where you train.

Missouri examples: rules that touch psychiatric placements

Missouri shows how a health system and a state can add layers to a psychiatric placement; neither example means a Missouri site will host Maryville students. SSM Health's student clinical policy asks schools to keep a background check that, for behavioral health rotations, adds the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry to the state criminal and federal exclusion checks.

Missouri's APRN rule matters if you plan to practice there. Missouri ties later controlled-substance prescribing authority to 300 or more clock hours of prescribing experience within the education program, logged on a Board of Nursing form and completed with a "qualified preceptor". The rule defines that preceptor as a prescribing APRN or a physician, so an LCSW or psychologist falls outside it. Timing: plan the second term during the first

2. NURS 660Psychopharmacology opens the door to NURS 662. Maryville's clinical packet arrives the semester before your first practicum; Exxat access opens about three to four months before that first clinical semester.
3. Before NURS 662Submit the site and preceptor request in Exxat and collect all four approvals: compliance, the request, site clearance and course faculty.
4. During NURS 662If your first preceptor sees only adults, line up the NURS 664 site now; a child and adolescent site may take longer to find than an adult one.
5. During NURS 664Read the NURS 667 syllabus for the specialty group and find a site that serves it.
