Maryville PMHNP practicums: NURS 662, 664 and 667

PMHNP courses, didactic and practicum, in order

The PMHNP concentration is 21 credits, three more than any other Maryville NP track, which brings the MSN to 50 credits. Four didactic courses and three practicums make it up, and the catalog gives no clinical hours for any of them.

The extra step before NURS 662

In the primary care and acute care tracks, the first practicum follows the three NP core courses directly. PMHNP adds a link to the chain: NURS 611, NURS 612 and NURS 615 open NURS 660, and only NURS 660 opens NURS 662, which runs alongside NURS 661. If NURS 660 slips a term, your first practicum slips with it, and so does the spot you asked a preceptor to hold.

Maryville's PMHNP program page gives about 20 months full time and 28 to 32 months part time. An older PMHNP landing page mentions just three yearly entry points (January, May and August), whereas the current MSN pages give six 2026 start dates for every program. Ask your enrollment advisor which applies to you before you map out practicum terms. Online starts and the three core courses cover the timing in more depth.

Three populations across three terms

A 2023 Maryville webinar laid out the PMHNP practicums as three semesters with different populations: adults and older adults first, then children, adolescents and families, then a specialty group. The current catalog matches the first step, describing NURS 662 with adult and older adult patients and the later two practicums across the lifespan.

The practical upshot is that one preceptor may not carry you through. An outpatient psychiatrist who sees only adults can fit NURS 662 but not a child and adolescent term. Plan the second term's site early, and check the current syllabus for how Maryville defines the specialty term, since the 2023 outline may have changed.

Maryville's 2023 webinars also said PMHNP students must complete some psychotherapy hours, with the rules set out in the clinical packet Maryville sends the semester before your practicum. They also ruled out retail settings and primary care settings without a psychiatric provider.

Who can precept a Maryville PMHNP student

Maryville's 2026 preceptor guidance widens the PMHNP list beyond the usual APRN, MD or DO: a PMHNP, LCSW, PsychD or PhD in Psychology can serve. The general rules still apply, including an unencumbered license where they practice, at least a year of experience and no personal or reporting relationship with you.

Older guidance adds a condition. The 2023 webinars said prescribing preceptors should be physicians or PMHNPs with psychiatric prescribing authority, and that some psychotherapy hours could be supervised by counselor-type professionals, with the PMHNP coordinator reviewing those arrangements. Read together, an LCSW or psychologist looks most useful for therapy-focused hours rather than a whole medication-management practicum. Confirm that reading with your course faculty before you build a term around a non-prescriber.

What Exxat needs before your first PMHNP session

Before any practicum day, Maryville wants four approvals: your Exxat Compliance record, the site and preceptor request, clearance from the practice, and your course faculty. For PMHNP, the request is where the preceptor's credentials carry the weight. Older Maryville guides had students look up and upload the preceptor's license and board certification themselves. For an LCSW or psychologist, ask the Online Clinical Team what documentation stands in for board certification.

Describe the site precisely in the site request: the population it serves, whether a psychiatric prescriber practices there, and whether your work will be medication management, therapy or both. A private psychiatric practice may never have signed a Maryville agreement, so find out early whether it will sign the MOU or use its own contract.

Keep every compliance item current all term. A lapse puts the placement On Hold, and time logged while you were out of compliance has to be repeated, on top of the hours you still owe.

Hours figures, older totals and state notes

Search results sometimes attach a clinical-hour figure to NURS 665; one third-party site gives 215 hours. The catalog lists NURS 665 as a didactic course, and Maryville publishes no hours for any single PMHNP course. The only official number is 750 for the track, and the clinical hours page explains what isn't published.

If Maryville admitted you in Fall 2023 or before, your plan may still follow the older PMHNP curriculum, put at 745 hours over four semesters in a 2023 webinar. New York and Louisiana both show "Does not meet" for PMHNP on the June 2026 licensure grids. A 2020-era status page also lists Oregon as closed to PMHNP, though the 2026 grid marks Oregon "Meets", so confirm your state with Maryville.
