Every Maryville NP track is open in Missouri

Maryville's June 2026 licensure grids mark Missouri “Meets” for all five NP concentrations, in every program that leads to NP licensure. Maryville's campus is in St. Louis, but the online programs have no campus visits, so living nearby doesn't change the process: you find the preceptor, and Maryville approves the preceptor and site.

Collaborative practice sits behind every Missouri NP preceptor

AANP classes Missouri as restricted practice. For their entire career, Missouri NPs practice under a collaborative practice arrangement (CPA) with a physician, with limits on controlled substances, chart review and ratios. When a Missouri NP precepts you, you work inside that practice's CPA and its protocols.

The Board of Nursing's CPA rule, 20 CSR 2200-4.200 (effective July 30, 2024), defines a CPA as written agreements, jointly agreed protocols or standing orders, with the physician available for consultation at all times. Where the NP diagnoses and starts treatment for acutely or chronically ill patients, the physician must be present at least once every two weeks and review at least 10% of the NP's services, or 20% for controlled-substance cases.

Excerpts of the statute, RSMo 334.104, add that a physician may collaborate with no more than six full-time-equivalent APRNs, PAs and assistant physicians combined, and that a new arrangement starts with at least a month of the physician continuously present. Neither the nursing nor the physician rules mention students, so any extra conditions come from the site and the school contract. More on Missouri NP clinical rules.

Who Missouri calls a qualified preceptor

Missouri's APRN rule, 20 CSR 2200-4.100 (effective May 30, 2024), defines a “qualified preceptor” as an APRN with current unrestricted RN and APRN licenses and prescriptive authority, or else an MD or DO whose prescriptive authority is unrestricted. PAs are not in the definition. That fits Maryville's own rule of an APRN, MD or DO, board certified, with at least a year of experience (see preceptor requirements).

The definition matters after you graduate. For controlled-substance prescriptive authority in Missouri, an APRN needs evidence of at least 300 clock hours of preceptorial experience in prescribing with a qualified preceptor, documented on a Board form, plus an advanced pharmacology course, 1,000 hours of post-graduation practice and delegation in a CPA. If you plan to practice in Missouri, keep a clear record of who supervised your prescribing hours.

The same rule sets 500 faculty-supervised clinical hours as the minimum for APRN programs; Maryville's 750 sit above it. We found no Missouri Board rule governing APRN student placements themselves or preceptor-to-student ratios.

Missouri's preceptor tax credit skips NP preceptors

RSMo 135.690 and rule 20 CSR 2231-3.030 set up Missouri's Community-Based Faculty Preceptor Tax Credit. It's available to physicians and physician assistants licensed in Missouri who precept without direct compensation. The student must be a medical student at a Missouri medical or osteopathic college or a PA student in a Missouri PA program, in a core rotation of at least 120 hours in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry or OB/GYN.

So the credit covers neither NP preceptors nor a physician who precepts an NP student, even though Maryville is a Missouri school. Leave it out of your pitch to Missouri clinicians. A federal bill, the PRECEPT Nurses Act (H.R. 392), would create a nurse-preceptor credit covering APRN students, but it is pending, not law. Details are on the Missouri preceptor tax credit page.

St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia

Most Missouri NP students look first in the St. Louis and Kansas City metros, then Springfield and Columbia. CoxHealth, MU Health Care, BJC HealthCare, SSM Health and Mercy are among the large systems. We list them as places students search, not as sites that have agreed to take Maryville students, and each runs its own intake:

• Mercy: you secure a Mercy preceptor first, then apply for an Individual Learning Experience 3 weeks to 60 days before the start date. The school needs an Academic Affiliation Agreement with that Mercy facility.
• SSM Health: provider students find an SSM Health provider, then submit the Student Clinical Placement Form; the school sends the formal request 21 days ahead.
• BJC: St. Louis Children's Hospital handles APRN student precepting through its Department of Clinical Education. BJC merged with Kansas City's Saint Luke's Health System in January 2024.
• Saint Luke's gives first priority to its own employees and Saint Luke's College students.
• University Health in Kansas City says it is placing only its own employees; the page's date is unknown.
• CoxHealth in Springfield wants each NP rotation request at least 30 days ahead.

Both big metros cross state lines. The St. Louis metro reaches into Illinois, a state outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, while the Kansas City metro reaches into Kansas, where The University of Kansas Health System takes requests only through the MOKAN platform. Your RN license for Missouri clinicals

Missouri's compact date is January 19, 2018, when it implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact. A Missouri multistate license, or one from another compact state, meets Maryville's rule that your RN license be unencumbered and valid where you see patients. Missouri hasn't enacted the separate APRN Compact.
