Maryville tracks open to Illinois residents

All five of Maryville's NP concentrations are marked “Meets” for Illinois, in the MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP with an NP concentration and BSN-to-DNP grids alike. Maryville's older 2020 status page, which named limits for New York, Louisiana, Oregon and Washington, doesn't mention Illinois either.

Reduced practice and who can precept you in Illinois

AANP puts Illinois in its reduced-practice group. In some settings an Illinois NP keeps a collaborative agreement with a physician, and for benzodiazepines and certain Schedule II drugs, prescribing rests on that agreement or on meeting practice and CE requirements plus holding a consultative relationship. Your Illinois preceptor may well work under one, which is ordinary here.

Maryville's rule decides who qualifies. The preceptor must be an APRN, MD or DO with board certification, a year or longer in practice, and an unencumbered license in their practice state. For PMHNP students, Maryville also accepts an LCSW, PsychD or PhD in psychology. Details are on preceptor requirements.

Illinois also gives APRN preceptors a reason to say yes: under its APRN renewal rules, precepting an APRN student across an academic semester or quarter is worth 10 CE hours, to a limit of 30 per renewal period, with the student's school documenting it. Our summary doesn't limit this to Illinois schools, but a preceptor should confirm with IDFPR. We found no Illinois preceptor tax credit, and Maryville doesn't pay preceptors.

What Illinois asks of out-of-state programs

Programs from other states seeking Illinois clinical placements must file what 68 Ill. Adm. Code 1300.340(n) lists:

• a record of approval or accreditation from their home state's nursing board
• a request letter covering the clinical agencies, units and time frame
• a course syllabus
• the executed clinical facility contract
• forms covering preceptors and faculty qualifications

A granted approval is good for two years and renewable with annual reports, and nursing faculty need Illinois RN licenses. As part of the RN program-approval section, it leaves open whether graduate or APRN programs are covered. It also sets conditions for facility preceptors: program faculty approve and orient them, they're on hand whenever the student gives care, and their RN license is current in the student's practice state.

An Illinois RN license, with no compact shortcut

Illinois never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, and nothing on the compact's own map suggests a bill is pending. A multistate license, from Missouri or anywhere else, carries no practice privilege in Illinois. Maryville wants an unencumbered RN license valid where you see patients, so an Illinois clinical requires an Illinois license issued by IDFPR.

225 ILCS 65/50-15(b)(10) exempts RNs licensed in other states who are enrolled in a graduate program “in this State.” Maryville is in Missouri, so plan on the Illinois license rather than the exemption. See RN license for clinicals.

Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and the St. Louis side

Chicago-Naperville-Elgin dwarfs every other Illinois metro; next come the Illinois part of the St. Louis metro, then Peoria and Rockford. Among the state's large systems are UChicago Medicine and Northwestern Medicine, Endeavor Health, Advocate Health Care, and OSF HealthCare. They show where NP students tend to look; none is a site known to accept Maryville students.

On the Illinois side of St. Louis, a Missouri clinic may be closer, but the license rule flips at the state line: a Missouri site needs a Missouri license. One naming trap: St. Louis-based Mercy (mercy.net) is a different organization from Mercyhealth, which operates in Wisconsin and Illinois.
