Maryville FNP: the preceptor and family practice site you need

The FNP program in brief

Maryville's MSN with the Family Nurse Practitioner concentration is taught entirely online, with no campus visits required, and your clinical hours happen locally, in a setting you arrange near home. The degree is 47 credits: a 29-credit core shared with the other NP tracks and an 18-credit FNP concentration. Full time, the FNP page says you can finish in 20 months at the fastest; part-time students should plan on 28 to 32.

You can start six times a year. Maryville lists 2026 starts on January 12 and March 9, May 4 and June 29, and August 24 and October 19, and the October start takes applications until October 9. The MSN has no thesis or capstone project; a 2023 Maryville webinar called it a clinical-based program. That leaves the preceptor search as the largest task outside your coursework, and online starts shows how it lines up with the calendar.

Three practicums, 750 hours

Every FNP clinical hour sits in three 3-credit practicums, each paired with a classroom course. The table is the short version; the course page has the catalog titles, corequisites and the C-numbered twins.

Since Spring 2024 the FNP total is 750 hours. Maryville doesn't publish how those hours divide among the three courses, so plan with each syllabus rather than an assumed even share. Anyone admitted before Spring 2024 might still be following the older FNP plan, 745 hours over four semesters according to a 2023 webinar; clinical hours explains how to switch.

The preceptor and practice an FNP needs

Maryville's baseline covers every NP track: the preceptor must be board certified as an APRN, MD or DO, have practiced for a year or more, and hold an unencumbered license in their own state. For an FNP student, the natural match is a family nurse practitioner or a family medicine physician. Per Maryville's 2026 guidance, PAs and CRNAs don't typically qualify, and the people excluded run to relatives, your supervisor, anyone reporting to you, a direct work colleague and your own provider.

The setting matters as much as the person. In 2023 Maryville said FNP placements must sit in a primary or preventive setting, with "nothing hospitalist". The family focus narrows it further: an internal medicine office that sees only adults can carry NURS 621 and NURS 624, but NURS 630 asks for children and families. The strongest FNP site is a practice whose panel runs from infants to older adults.

That kind of practice may be able to host you all the way through. A 2023 webinar said FNP students may keep one preceptor across terms, though each practicum still goes through Maryville's approval. Preceptor requirements covers the exception form and the edge cases.

Admission rules that shape your placement

To get in, you need a BSN (from a regionally accredited school and a CCNE, ACEN or CNEA-accredited program), a cumulative GPA of 3.0, at least a year of professional nursing experience, and a US RN license that is current and unencumbered. The 2026-27 catalog adds that applicants should be working as RNs now.

Two of those rules follow you into clinicals. Your RN license must be clean and valid wherever you see patients, so moving means updating your address in Self-Service and holding a license in the new state, per Maryville's welcome page. Your current job can become a site as well, but only off the clock: paid hours don't count, and a colleague or manager can't precept you. Clinicals at your employer walks through those conditions.

Where the FNP is open: Louisiana yes, New York no

The FNP reaches more states than any other Maryville NP track. On Maryville's June 2026 licensure grids, New York is marked "Does not meet" for every one of the five NP concentrations, and Louisiana gets that mark for four, which leaves the FNP as the only Maryville NP track marked "Meets" in Louisiana. Every other state and territory on the grid is marked "Meets".

A State Authorization Status page from 2020, which Maryville still hosts, tells a stricter story. It says Washington residents can't be enrolled in Maryville's online nursing program, which the 2026 grid contradicts, and its Oregon limits cover other tracks but not the FNP. Confirm your state with Maryville before you apply, and read out-of-state clinicals if you might train across a state line.

Where FNP students find family practice sites

Maryville's 2026 advice is to start with your own network: former coworkers now in primary care, nurse practitioners you trained or studied with, and clinicians you know from past jobs, minus anyone the relationship rules exclude. Beyond that, these kinds of sites fit the family and preventive focus:

• Independent family medicine practices, where one or two clinicians see every age
• Community health centers and rural health clinics with family medicine providers
• Health-system primary care offices, which usually route students through a central education office
• Combined internal medicine and pediatrics practices, useful when NURS 630 needs children

Large systems tend to publish their own student rules. In Missouri, for example, Mercy's Individual Learning Experience page asks the student to secure a Mercy preceptor before applying, sets an application window running from 60 days to three weeks before the start date, and requires the school and that Mercy facility to have an Academic Affiliation Agreement. It shows how one system works; it isn't a sign that Mercy takes Maryville students.

When to start: count back from NURS 621

1. When you applyBegin a short list of family practices near you and people who might precept. A name and a first conversation are enough at this point.
2. Before NURS 612NURS 612 carries clinical time of its own, which approved students may begin in week 5, so check early whether it needs a separate preceptor.
3. The semester before your first practicumMaryville sends the preceptor qualifications, the site types that qualify and setup steps for its clinical database. Your Exxat access follows, some three to four months before the first clinical semester.
4. Request and approvalsEnter the site and preceptor request in Exxat, then wait for all four approvals: compliance, the request itself, the site's clearance and course faculty.
5. Before NURS 630If your first practice doesn't see children, line up the family site a term ahead rather than waiting for NURS 624 to end.
