Maryville FNP practicums: NURS 621, 624 and 630

The FNP practicum courses in the catalog

The FNP concentration is 18 credits, three didactic courses and three practicums, on top of a 29-credit core. The table follows Maryville's 2026-27 catalog. None of these course descriptions gives an hour count; the only published figure is 750 for the whole track.

Each C version shares its plain twin's title, credits and description, and all six numbers are active in the 2026-27 course list. The catalog never says what the letter means, so use the number your program plan shows. Our clinical hours page sets the FNP beside the other four tracks.

What comes before NURS 621

NURS 621 lists three prerequisites: NURS 611 Advanced Pathophysiology, NURS 612 Advanced Health Assessment and NURS 615 Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics, with NURS 620 running alongside as a corequisite. Maryville's FNP page puts the whole track at as few as 20 months full time, or 28 to 32 months part time. The three prerequisite courses have a page of their own.

Your preceptor search has to start well before NURS 621 opens. Maryville's page for admitted students promises, for the semester ahead of your first clinical, the rules for preceptors, a list of site types that qualify and instructions for setting up the clinical database. Exxat access follows roughly three to four months out from that first clinical semester.

NURS 612 can pull the first placement earlier still, because it has a clinical component that approved students may start in week 5. Check whether your plan needs an approved preceptor for NURS 612 before you think about NURS 621.

The primary care site and preceptor FNP calls for

Plan all three FNP practicums in outpatient primary care. In a 2023 webinar, Maryville said FNP, AGPCNP and pediatric placements must be in a primary or preventive care setting, with "nothing hospitalist". The catalog points the same way: NURS 624 names a primary care setting, and NURS 630 centers on individuals and families.

NURS 630 is the course to plan hardest. Its didactic partner, NURS 629, covers children and women's health and the child within the family, so a practice that sees only adults will struggle to give you that mix. Maryville hasn't published pediatric or women's health minimums for the FNP, so ask course faculty what the course expects before you commit a preceptor to it.

Maryville's current rule for who can precept: a board-certified APRN, MD or DO, licensed without encumbrance in the state where they practice and at least a year into practice. Physician assistants and CRNAs, the 2026 guidance adds, don't typically qualify. Relatives, anyone in your reporting line, direct work colleagues and your own provider are all ruled out. What Exxat must show before your first FNP shift

Maryville lists four approvals that must be in place before any clinical day, and they apply to each FNP practicum. Requests sit under each course's wishlist in Exxat, so expect a fresh request for NURS 624 and NURS 630 even if your NURS 621 preceptor carries on; confirm the current practice with the Online Clinical Team.

Before day one of each practicum

• Exxat Compliance approved and current, including the background check and drug screen run through Universal
• The site and preceptor request approved in Exxat; open View Details on the course wishlist to read its status and reviewer comments
• For a preceptor without board certification, an approved Preceptor Exception Form attached under My Request
• Sign-off from the clinic's education contact or practice manager
• Approval from your course faculty
• A signed MOU or affiliation agreement with the site, or the site's own contract in its place

Only once Exxat shows final approval should you check whether the clinic wants a Maryville photo ID, which Maryville now issues in digital form. The Exxat guide shows where each item lives.

Louisiana, post-master's and older-curriculum FNP students

FNP is the one Maryville NP track open in Louisiana. The June 2026 licensure grids mark Louisiana "Does not meet" for the other four concentrations and "Meets" for FNP, and New York shows "Does not meet" across all five. Post-master's FNP students take the same three practicums inside a 35-credit certificate. The gap analysis reaches further for this track: Maryville reviews prior transcripts for equivalents of NURS 620, NURS 621, NURS 623 and NURS 624 only for the post-master's FNP. Whether that changes your practicum list is Maryville's decision, so get the answer in writing before you line up preceptors.
