Maryville AGACNP: a hospital preceptor, and time for the hospital's process

AGACNP at Maryville, in brief

Maryville's AGACNP is an online MSN concentration: coursework is 100% online, no campus visits are required, and your clinical hours happen in a hospital near you. It's 47 credits, 29 in the core and 18 in the acute care concentration, and full-time students can finish in as little as 20 months, with part-time study running 28 to 32 months, the same range as Maryville's primary care tracks.

Maryville's AGACNP landing page lists six entry points a year, and the MSN page's 2026 dates run from January 12 to October 19. To be admitted you'll need an accredited BSN, a 3.0 GPA, an unencumbered US RN license, a year or more of professional nursing experience and, per the catalog, a current RN job. The admission list Maryville publishes doesn't mention critical care experience.

Three acute care practicums

Each AGACNP practicum runs with a Diagnosis and Management course. The table is the short view; the course page covers the catalog records and why the numbers sometimes carry a C.

The three share 750 clinical hours, and Maryville doesn't publish the split. A 2023 Maryville webinar gave the older AGACNP curriculum 830 hours over four semesters; anyone admitted in or before Fall 2023 keeps that plan unless they choose the current one. Because NURS 641 needs all three NP core courses finished, the first hospital placement follows them directly.

The preceptor and service AGACNP calls for

Maryville said in 2023 that acute care students need "some type of hospitalist type setting", in contrast to the primary care rule for its family, adult primary care and pediatric tracks. The person precepting you still needs Maryville's baseline credentials: APRN, MD or DO, board certified, licensed without encumbrance in their state and at least a year into practice.

That baseline can trim your hospital list. PAs, in Maryville's 2026 wording, "don't typically qualify", and in 2023 a Maryville speaker said no specialty accepted them, so a service whose advanced practice staff are mostly PAs may leave you without an eligible preceptor. Look for services where a board-certified acute care NP or a hospitalist physician would be your day-to-day preceptor.

Plan for more than one preceptor. A Maryville presenter said in 2023 that they thought AGACNP students were capped at 250 hours with a single preceptor, sounding unsure, and no current page confirms it. Asking the Online Clinical Team early costs little; finding out during NURS 643 can cost a term. Preceptor requirements lists the other limits.

Your hospital job: a head start with conditions

If you already work in a hospital, it's natural to start the search there. A 2023 Maryville webinar allowed an employer site when there's no conflict of interest with your present role and you aren't working during the practicum. Hours you're paid for don't count, and hours at work can't be counted toward clinical time in another setting either.

Maryville's 2026 guidance adds the people rules: nobody who supervises you, reports to you, works beside you directly or evaluates your work. In a hospital, that often points to a different unit or service from the one you staff. Expect the education office to run its student process for you even as an employee; some systems, as the examples below show, give employees priority. States: New York and Louisiana closed, Oregon unclear

Maryville's June 2026 licensure grid marks the AGACNP "Does not meet" in New York and Louisiana, and "Meets" in every other state and territory it lists. The certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP grids show the same two states for acute care.

An older State Authorization Status page, last modified in 2020, lists Oregon among the states where Maryville couldn't enroll AGACNP students, and says it couldn't enroll Washington residents in its online nursing program at all. The 2026 grid marks both states "Meets". It also notes Maryville's NC-SARA participation, under which it may place students in clinical practica in member states. If you live in Oregon or Washington, get Maryville's answer in writing before you apply. You'll also need an unencumbered RN license in the state where the hospital is; out-of-state clinicals covers the rest.

How hospitals take NP students: Missouri and Kansas City examples

Hospitals run their own intake for advanced practice students, and the rules vary by system. These examples from Missouri and the Kansas City area show the range; none of them is a statement that a system hosts Maryville students.

• Saint Luke's Health System (Kansas City): an Advanced Practice Provider/Graduate Nursing Student Clinical Placement form, with first priority for Saint Luke's employees and Saint Luke's College students, and onboarding documents collected on its Clinical Student platform from June 1, 2026.
• University Health (Kansas City): a Graduate (APRN) Nursing Placement Request form with a Letter of Good Standing, though its undated page limits current placements to University Health employees.
• The University of Kansas Health System: the school, not the student, submits every request through the MOKAN platform, and some campuses pair preceptors centrally, so students shouldn't contact preceptors there directly.
• CoxHealth (Springfield): an annual application plus a request for each rotation at least 30 days ahead, with an active affiliation agreement required.

The lesson is to expect a system-level application, sometimes one the school must submit, on top of Maryville's own review. St. Louis and Kansas City sites covers more of the region's systems.

Timing: two clocks, Maryville's and the hospital's
