NURS 611, NURS 612 and NURS 615: the courses before your first practicum

What the three courses are

Maryville's 2026-27 catalog lists these three in the NP core, alongside NURS 603 Professional Role Development: Advanced Practice Nurse and NURS 610 Health Promotion/Disease Prevention. In the post-master's certificates, the three stand on their own as an 11-credit NP core.

They are the same for all five concentrations: FNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, PMHNP and PNP. That makes them common ground for every Maryville NP student, whatever setting their practicums will need later.

None of the three catalog descriptions states clinical hours. For the practicums that follow, Maryville publishes only the concentration total, which the clinical hours page explains.

The order: 611 and 615 first, then 612, then a practicum

For online students, the catalog sets a clear sequence. The first practicum in the FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP tracks lists all three courses as prerequisites, so none of them can be skipped on the way in.

1. NURS 611 and NURS 615Both are listed as online prerequisites for NURS 612, so they come first in a typical plan of study.
2. NURS 612 Advanced Health AssessmentThe largest of the three at 5 credits, and the one with a clinical component, which may start in week 5.
3. The first practicumNURS 621 or NURS 621C for FNP and AGPCNP, and NURS 641 or NURS 641C for AGACNP, require all three courses.

Two tracks add a step. In PMHNP, NURS 660 Psychopharmacology and Advanced Mental Health requires the three courses, and the first practicum, NURS 662, requires NURS 660. In PNP, the first practicum is NURS 655C Pediatric Health Promotion Practicum, which lists NURS 612 as its prerequisite; its paired course, NURS 650, lists all three and notes that 612 “may also be taken concurrently.”

NURS 612 has a clinical piece of its own

Advanced Health Assessment is not a classroom-only course. An Ask Maryville help article on the NURS 612 clinical says students who have all approvals may start their clinical in week 5 of the semester. That makes 612, not the first practicum, the earliest point where clinical time can appear on your plan.

The public article does not say how many hours the 612 clinical involves, which settings suit it, or whether the preceptor you use there can carry on into your first practicum. Nor does it list the approvals it means, though Maryville's general rule for graduate clinicals is four: compliance in Exxat, approval of the site and preceptor request in Exxat, clearance by the site itself, and course faculty sign-off.

Before your 612 term, ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team, or check the course in Canvas, what the clinical requires and whether it needs its own request in Exxat. The four approvals are laid out on the placement process page.

What this means for your preceptor search

Count the three courses as lead time. Exxat access starts roughly a season ahead, some 3–4 months out from your first clinical semester. Before that, in the preceding semester, the admitted-student welcome page says Maryville sends the qualifications a preceptor must meet, the kinds of site that qualify, and instructions for setting up its clinical database. A 2023 Maryville webinar went further, advising applicants to have a likely preceptor already in view.

Put together, the safer plan is to search while you are in NURS 611 and NURS 615, not after them. Waiting for the clinical information to arrive means starting outreach with a few months to spare, or less.

A checklist for your first NP core term

• Find the term your first clinical falls in, whether that is the NURS 612 clinical or your first practicum.
• Confirm the setting your track needs. The 2023 webinar put FNP, AGPCNP and PNP in primary or preventive care, “nothing hospitalist,” and AGACNP in a setting of the hospitalist type.
• Shortlist people who meet Maryville's basic rules for who can precept you: a board-certified APRN, MD or DO who has practiced a year or more.
• Ask each site early whether it uses its own contract or onboarding process, since the site's clearance is one of the approvals you need.
• Watch for Exxat access and the clinical information Maryville sends the semester before.

Certificate and DNP students: the timing can shift

Post-master's certificate students may not take all three courses at Maryville. The catalog's gap analysis reviews prior transcripts for equivalents of NURS 603, NURS 610 and all three courses on this page. If yours are accepted, the search window this page describes can shrink to almost nothing, and your first practicum may be close to your first term.

So certificate students should start looking at admission, not after a term of coursework. The post-master's certificate page covers the rest of that path.

DNP-NP students usually have more room. The 2023 webinar described DNP courses coming first, with students “finishing up with your clinicals” at the end. BSN-to-DNP students take the same three courses inside their 56-credit core, so the same sequence applies to them once they reach it.

What Maryville doesn't publish about these courses

Several timing questions have no public answer. Look in the Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center (Maryville login required), your Canvas course, or ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team.

• Hours for the NURS 612 clinical. Not in the catalog or the help article. Check the course syllabus.
• Per-course practicum hours. Maryville publishes 750 hours per concentration since Spring 2024, with no split by course.
• Site and preceptor request deadlines. No dates are public. Older Maryville guides refer to a priority request deadline but never date it.
• Whether one preceptor can cover 612 and your first practicum. Not stated. Ask before you ask a preceptor to commit to both.
• Term length. Not stated on current program pages; the online starts page covers what a 2023 webinar said.
