Maryville's preceptor placement assistance: what it is and when to ask

What Maryville says it offers

Maryville is open about the fact that help exists. The online nursing homepage says “We offer preceptor placement assistance,” and the Online Nursing Degrees page includes “Clinical placement assistance” in its list of program features. Maryville blog posts also name “nursing preceptor assistance” among the resources for online students.

The fullest description is “How to Find the Right Nursing Preceptor,” a Maryville blog post from February 2026. It calls the service the “preceptor mentorship program that Maryville offers,” and an advisor quoted in it says Maryville provides “preceptor mentors to secure preceptors if needed.”

So the public names are preceptor placement assistance, the preceptor mentorship program and preceptor mentors. They read as parts of one service, though no public page spells out how they relate or who the mentors are. That is worth knowing before you ask, because the words you use in your request should match Maryville's.

A fallback, not the first step

Maryville's starting rule is that you find your own preceptor. The welcome page for admitted MSN, BSN-DNP, DNP-NP and certificate students puts it this way: clinical preceptors are “arranged by students,” then “approved by program administration.” Placement assistance sits behind that rule, not in place of it.

In the 2026 blog's words, this support “isn't intended to be a first resource.” It gives two reasons: demand for the service is high, and running your own search builds a professional network you will use after graduation. The post aims the service at those who “have hit a wall in their search.”

Older sources say the same thing more bluntly. In a 2023 “Why Maryville Nursing” webinar, asked whether the university provides clinical sites, a speaker said the university doesn't, then described “safety nets” for students having a hard time. The 2026 wording reads as the current, better-described version of that safety net.

What students describe getting

The clearest accounts come from graduates quoted in Maryville's own 2026 post. A 2025 PMHNP graduate credited Maryville with making sure “that my preceptor was credentialed.” A PNP graduate described advisors sharing “different websites to look for and things to use.” Both describe support wrapped around a search the student was running.

Outside Maryville's pages, experiences vary. Students report mixed results: one FNP student complained on a nursing forum in 2023 that the program did not help students find preceptors. That post predates the 2026 description of preceptor mentors, so it may reflect an older setup, one student's experience, or both.

What none of these sources tells you is how often the mentorship program ends in a confirmed preceptor, or how long that takes. Maryville doesn't publish those figures.

What isn't public, and where to check

Maryville's open pages describe the service but not the mechanics. We found no public request form, eligibility rule, deadline or description of what a preceptor mentor does day to day.

Questions to take to Maryville

• How to request the assistance: a form, an email or a conversation with an advisor
• Whether you need to show a record of your own outreach first
• How far ahead of your clinical term you should ask
• Whether a preceptor mentor contacts clinics for you or coaches your own search
• Whether any separate charge applies
• What happens if the term is close and no preceptor has been found

The answers most likely sit in the Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center, the login-only hub Maryville calls the main source for clinical information. When and how to ask

Maryville doesn't publish a trigger point, so this is our reading of its guidance. Ask once your own search has clearly stalled, and early enough that a new name can still get through the Exxat request and the approvals before your term starts.

1. Run your own search first, and log itKeep a simple list of who you contacted, when, and what they said. It shows you did what Maryville asks first, and it stops the same offices being approached twice.
2. Pin down exactly what you needYour track, the practicum course number, term dates, your city and how far you can travel. A PMHNP student needing NURS 662 near Kansas City is a clearer request than someone needing a psych preceptor somewhere.
3. Ask in writingUse whatever route the resource center or the Online Clinical Team gives you, so there is a dated record of when you asked.
4. Keep searching in parallelThe 2023 webinar was explicit that the search stays your responsibility even with safety nets in place. Keep your outreach going until a preceptor is approved in Exxat.

What the assistance doesn't promise

No Maryville page we read promises a placement, a date or a particular site through the assistance. For a service in high demand that is a sensible design, but it means you should plan as though your own search is the one that will land, and treat any name from a preceptor mentor as a welcome addition.

Approval doesn't change either. However the preceptor is found, the site and preceptor request still goes in through Exxat, and Maryville still reviews the preceptor, the site, the site agreement and your compliance before your first clinical day.
