Maryville NP clinicals in Kansas: full practice, Kansas-licensed preceptors

Full practice, with a license condition for your preceptor
AANP lists Kansas as a full-practice state. That doesn't loosen Maryville's rules: your preceptor still has to be an APRN, MD or DO who is board certified, has put in at least a year of practice and holds an unencumbered license.
The Kansas State Board of Nursing layers on its own expectations for APRN clinicals in the state. Citing K.A.R. 60-17-104, its guidance for out-of-state programs says a preceptor should be oriented, should sign an agreement, and should carry a Kansas APRN license matching your role; it also says a Kansas APRN license is required to supervise APRN students clinically. In practice, look for a Kansas-licensed APRN whose role matches the one you're training for.
Maryville accepts MD and DO preceptors, but the Kansas guidance is written around APRN preceptors. If the clinician you have in mind is a Kansas physician, ask Maryville how it handles that before you enter the request in Exxat. The complete list is on preceptor requirements.

No Board approval step for out-of-state APRN programs
Out-of-state online APRN programs face no formal KSBN approval before Kansas students enroll, the Board says; it reviews them later, when a graduate applies for Kansas APRN licensure. Faculty teaching online need no Kansas license. Kansas also doesn't make faculty visit you during clinicals, and any who come are treated as visitors.
That licensure review is where the details matter. KSBN looks for national accreditation; 45 or more credit hours; advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment and advanced pharmacology at 3 or more credit hours apiece; and role-specialty clinical hours, set at 750 for students admitted after March 1, 2025 and 500 for those admitted before that date. The Maryville courses to point to are NURS 611 Advanced Pathophysiology, NURS 612 Advanced Health Assessment and NURS 615 Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics. Keep your transcript and hour records.
Kansas City straddles the line; Wichita and Topeka don't
The Kansas City metro spans both states, and about 938,000 of its residents live on the Kansas side. The University of Kansas Health System says its Kansas City-metro campuses take part in the MOKAN Clinical Education Partnership, so the school has to submit every request through the MOKAN platform. Its Olathe and Paola locations pair preceptors centrally, so don't contact their preceptors directly.
Outside Kansas City, NP students search around Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan. Other large systems are Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail Health and HCA's Wichita system, Wesley Healthcare. They show where students tend to look; none is known to have agreed to take Maryville students.

Your RN license for Kansas clinicals
Kansas has had the Nurse Licensure Compact in effect since July 1, 2019. According to KSBN, an APRN student in a Kansas clinical is practicing under an RN license recognized by Kansas, either multistate or Kansas single-state, in the capacity of a student of advanced practice nursing. Missouri is also a compact state, so one multistate license covers both halves of Kansas City.
Kansas hasn't enacted the APRN Compact, and our research found no Kansas preceptor tax credit or similar incentive. Licensing detail is on RN license for clinicals.

Can a Kansas physician precept my Maryville NP clinicals?
Maryville allows MD and DO preceptors. The Kansas Board, though, writes its out-of-state APRN program guidance around a preceptor licensed as a Kansas APRN in your role, and it says one is required to supervise APRN students. If your planned preceptor is a physician, ask Maryville how it applies that guidance before you submit the site and preceptor request in Exxat.
Does Kansas have to approve Maryville before I start clinicals?
No. According to KSBN, out-of-state online APRN programs don't go through a formal Board approval before Kansas students enroll. The Board reviews the program later, when you apply for Kansas APRN licensure after graduating. Maryville's own four approvals in Exxat still apply before your first clinical day.
Can I do Maryville clinicals on the Missouri side of Kansas City?
Yes, as far as your RN license goes, because Kansas and Missouri are both compact states. The differences are in the preceptor and the site: Missouri NPs practice under a physician collaborative practice arrangement, and big Missouri-side systems such as Saint Luke's give priority to their own employees and students.
Should I call University of Kansas Health System preceptors myself?
Not at its Olathe and Paola locations, which pair preceptors centrally and ask students not to contact them directly. For its Kansas City-metro campuses, the school must submit requests through the MOKAN platform, so ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team how that would work for your course.
Will my Maryville hours meet Kansas licensure rules?
Kansas looks for 750 role-specialty clinical hours if you were admitted after March 1, 2025, or 500 if admitted before. Every Maryville NP concentration has carried 750 hours since Spring 2024. If you're on Maryville's older curriculum, check your track's total against the 500-hour line.
