Virtual clinical options: what Maryville has and hasn't said

What Maryville publishes, and what it leaves out

Start with the gap. No public Maryville page we found caps telehealth hours, says whether simulation counts toward a practicum, or sets a minimum of direct patient care for NP students. The split of the 750 clinical hours by course isn't public either.

What Maryville does publish leans toward clinicals in person. Its MSN, certificate and DNP pages carry the line “Complete clinicals locally in your preferred setting.” One of the four approvals is clearance from the site's education department or manager, and a preceptor must be licensed where they practice. Those rules assume a real site and a real preceptor, however the visits happen.

Where an answer is most likely to be

• Your syllabus, and the clinical packet Maryville sends the semester before your first practicum
• The login-only Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center, which holds course clinical requirements
• Your course faculty, whose approval is one of the four you need

Four kinds of “virtual,” and the question for each

Students use the word for quite different arrangements, and each raises its own question for your faculty.

“Nothing published” means only that the rule isn't on Maryville's public pages. Your syllabus or the Resource Center may settle it, so don't read silence as a yes.

Why in-person placement stays the main route

Each practicum is built around hands-on care of a population: primary care for FNP and AGPCNP, children for PNP, acute care for AGACNP, and for PMHNP, per a 2023 webinar, an adult rotation, a child, adolescent and family rotation, then a specialty rotation. Maryville's welcome page says preceptors evaluate your performance with faculty input, and a preceptor can only judge what they see you do.

Some courses are hard to picture at a distance. NURS 612 Advanced Health Assessment includes clinical time, which Maryville lets you start from the fifth week once every approval is through, and AGACNP practicums sit in hospitalist-type settings. Plan on in person for those unless your faculty tell you otherwise in writing.

Where a virtual piece may fit is as a supplement, such as part of a PMHNP rotation with a preceptor whose practice already sees patients by video. Even then, the decision belongs to your faculty.

Licensing and location questions telehealth raises

Telehealth separates where you sit from where the patient is, and Maryville's licensing rules are written around place. The welcome page requires an unencumbered RN license “in the state in which they are seeing patients,” and your preceptor needs an unencumbered license where they practice. With video visits, ask Maryville which state counts: yours, the practice's, or the patient's.

State authorization adds a second layer. On Maryville's June 2026 licensure grids, no NP track meets New York's requirements, and only FNP meets Louisiana's. Getting a virtual arrangement approved

If you want to explore a virtual component, order matters: ask before you look, not after you've found someone.

1. Ask your course faculty in writingName the course, the kind of arrangement and roughly how many hours you have in mind. Keep the reply.
2. Check the syllabus and Resource CenterLook for any telehealth or simulation language, and note it for your request.
3. Find a preceptor who meets Maryville's rulesWorking remotely doesn't change the preceptor requirements: APRN, MD or DO, board certified, licensed where they practice, a year or more in practice.
4. Request it in Exxat like any placementThe practice still signs Maryville's MOU or its own contract, and all four approvals still apply.
5. Log with careRecord video-visit time the way your course asks, and keep compliance current; hours logged during a lapse must be repeated.
