Logging clinical hours at Maryville: what counts and what isn't published

Where Maryville hours get logged

The likeliest answer is Exxat, but Maryville doesn't state it in so many words. Its June 2026 article on missing requirements says that while your Exxat account is locked you cannot “log hours or patients.” That implies your time and your patient encounters are both recorded there.

Guides from 2021 describe a different setup, with time logs kept in eValue and approved by the preceptor; our eValue page covers that history. We found no Maryville clinical log form by name on any public page, so the entry format, the required fields and any deadline for entries are details to find in your syllabus.

Your total is set at program level. Since Spring 2024 every NP concentration carries 750 clinical hours across three practicums, while anyone admitted in Fall 2023 or before may remain on the older curriculum; see Maryville clinical hours. Per-course hours aren't published, so don't assume an even split between practicums.

What counts, and what doesn't

Maryville's public sources settle some kinds of time and say nothing about others. Here is where each stands.

Paid hours at your employer don't count

Your workplace can sometimes be your clinical site, but your paid time and your clinical log never overlap. In a 2023 webinar Maryville said an employer can serve as your clinical site when there is no conflict of interest with your present role, then drew the line: “You cannot be working during the time of the practicum.”

Two things follow for your log. Hours you are paid for can't be entered as clinical hours, and, per the same webinar, hours done at work can't count toward a clinical in another setting either. Maryville's 2026 preceptor blog also rules out a direct supervisor, a direct report, a direct work colleague or anyone who evaluates your performance as your preceptor, which rules out many of the people on your own unit.

Preceptor sign-off

Maryville's older guides make the preceptor the person who approves your time. In the 2021 eValue articles, preceptors approved time logs in the “Clinical Hours Supervision” tool and completed the NP Student Evaluation near the end of each rotation.

How sign-off works in Exxat today isn't described on any public Maryville page. Settle it with your preceptor before day one: which system, how often they will review your entries, and what they need from you to approve them.

A few habits make approval easy whatever the system. Enter each shift on the day it happens, match the hours to what your preceptor actually saw you do, and correct a mistake as soon as you spot it rather than at the end of the course. What Maryville doesn't publish

Several hour rules that students search for aren't on any public Maryville page. Where they exist, they are most likely in your course syllabus, the clinical packet or the login-only Graduate Nursing Clinical Resource Center.

• Hours per practicum course under the 750-hour rule
• A minimum number of direct patient care hours
• Population splits within the FNP and PNP tracks
• Limits on telehealth or simulation hours
• A named clinical log form, its fields, or a deadline for entries
• Whether the 250-hour cap per preceptor that a 2023 presenter mentioned for AGACNP still applies

Where a rule isn't written down, ask your course faculty before you log the hours, not after. If the answer needs to go higher, Maryville's help center points to the course's Graduate Nursing Lead Faculty once your instructor has been asked. Keep the answer in writing, so you have it if the question comes up again.

Keeping your log clean

Small log problems are easiest to fix while they are still small. A steady routine catches them early.

A routine that holds up

• Log hours and patients on the day of the shift, while the details are fresh
• Record the time you actually spent, not the time you planned
• Keep a running total against your course's required hours, so a shortfall shows early
• Check your Exxat compliance dates before each shift, because hours during a lapse must be repeated
• Tell your course faculty the week you fall behind, not at the end of the term
