Short on hours mid-practicum: closing the gap in a Maryville course

Work out the real gap

Start with numbers, not a feeling of being behind. Maryville sets 750 clinical hours for every NP concentration since Spring 2024, spread across three practicums, but it doesn't publish hours for each course, so don't assume an even split. Your syllabus or Canvas course has the figure you're measured against.

Find the cause before you add hours

More hours only help if whatever slowed you down is fixed. Match your situation to the closest cause:

• Your preceptor has fewer days than planned. Ask for specific extra dates, or look for a second preceptor to share the load.
• Your approvals came late. Clinical can't start until all four approvals are in, and in NURS 612 not before week 5, so a late start leaves fewer weeks. Recalculate your weekly target from the day you actually started.
• Your account went on hold. Clear the item in Exxat first, and count any hours logged during the lapse as hours to repeat.
• Your job keeps getting in the way. Clinical days can't overlap with paid time, so fix the schedule with your employer rather than squeezing clinical into a shift.
• Your preceptor left. That problem has its own steps; see preceptor dropped out.

Talk to faculty now, with numbers

Tell your course faculty in the week you fall behind, not the week the course ends. Their sign-off was one of the conditions for your clinical to begin, and they set your final grade, so they are the people who can say what your course allows.

Bring the worksheet, the cause and your plan. Ask whether you may add a preceptor or site, what happens if hours can't be finished by the end date, and whether anything beyond in-person patient care counts. Maryville doesn't publish those answers, so get them in writing.

Adding a second preceptor or site

A second preceptor is often the most direct fix when your first one can't offer enough days. Maryville's older eValue guides expected a schedule to be created per preceptor and per site within a semester, a hint that more than one preceptor per course has been possible. Confirm for your course before you arrange anything.

Anyone you add must meet Maryville's preceptor rules and go through your Exxat request before you log time with them. A new site brings its own agreement and clearance, so a second clinician at your current site is usually simpler. Build that approval time into your weekly target.

PMHNP students have one more option to ask about. Maryville's 2023 MSN webinar described part of the psychotherapy requirement as something a counselor-type professional could supervise, subject to the PMHNP coordinator's review. A shortfall there may have a different fix from a shortfall in prescribing hours.

Catch-up traps that cost hours

Students under pressure tend to make the same few mistakes, and each can mean hours you have to repeat or can't count at all:

• Logging part of a paid shift, even at a site where you also train. Maryville said in 2023 that paid work hours can't count as clinical hours.
• Letting a TB test, flu shot, insurance card or BLS card expire during a busy stretch, which puts the placement on hold.
• Starting with a new preceptor or site before the request is approved.
• Counting a day with a clinician who covered for your preceptor, without first asking whether that time counts.
• Entering hours a preceptor didn't actually supervise, or catching up the log in one batch at the end.
