Why one late practicum moves your finish date

Maryville's practicums are built as a chain. Each NP concentration has three 3-credit practicums, and later courses list earlier ones as prerequisites: AGPCNP's NURS 627C requires NURS 621 and NURS 624, and PMHNP's NURS 662 requires NURS 660 first. A missing link holds up everything after it.

Several practicums are also paired with a didactic course as corequisites, such as NURS 620 with NURS 621, NURS 661 with NURS 662, and NURS 651 with NURS 652. So a practicum that can't start usually takes its paired course with it, and the delay lands on your last practicum, the one that sets your graduation.

Six starts a year, and what they don't solve

Maryville's 2026 calendar has six starts, the first on January 12 and the last on October 19, one every eight weeks. That makes a missed term sound like a short wait. For a practicum, it often isn't.

A 2023 Maryville webinar said clinical and concentration courses run in 16-week sessions, so one practicum can span more than one of those start dates. For PMHNP and PNP, older concentration pages mention just three entry points a year. And Maryville doesn't publish which starts each practicum is offered in.

So the real wait is until your particular practicum next begins, and your advisor is the person who can give you that date. Ask for it in writing, along with how your remaining courses would line up after it. The start calendar itself is on Maryville online starts.

How the delay plays out by program

The chain is the same in every NP program, but where the practicums sit changes how much a delay hurts.

• MSN. The practicums follow the NP core courses and run in sequence, so the last one usually sets your finish date.
• Post-master's certificate. The practicums are the same courses, and the 2023 webinar said the hours still apply even for practicing NPs adding a specialty.
• DNP-NP. The 2023 webinar said DNP courses come first and “you're finishing up with your clinicals,” so a late practicum is close to a late degree.
• BSN-to-DNP. The longest path, at “as few as 40 months,” with the same three practicums inside it.
• PMHNP in any program. The rotations run in order: adults and older adults, then children, adolescents and families, then a specialty group. Missing the first shifts both of the others.

What else moves when graduation moves

The cost of a late practicum is mostly time, and time has knock-on effects. None of them can be put in figures that hold for every student, but all are worth checking:

• Certification and licensure. Both wait for your degree, so each term of delay moves them too.
• A job tied to your credential. An offer that depends on your graduation or license date may need a new start date.
• Semester fees. Some Maryville fees are charged per semester, so an extra term brings its own. Ask the financial aid office how an added term affects your aid.
• Compliance renewals. TB testing, the flu vaccine and your insurance card are annual items in Exxat, and a longer program means more renewals.
• Your preceptor's calendar. A yes for this term's dates doesn't carry over to a later term, so a delay can mean a new search.
• Missouri prescribing. If you'll practice in Missouri, controlled-substance prescriptive authority requires 1,000 hours of APRN practice after graduation, so that clock starts later too.

Keeping the delay short

You can't always prevent a delay, but you can usually stop it from doubling. This order is our suggestion, not a Maryville rule.
