New York and Maryville's NP programs: what the grids say

Every Maryville NP track reads “Does not meet” for New York

Maryville posts a licensure grid for each program on its Professional Licensure Information page. The June 2026 versions give New York the same answer in every NP row, whichever degree path you're on.

Maryville's older State Authorization Status page, last modified in 2020 and still online, goes further: it says Maryville can't enroll students from New York into its online nursing program and has no authorization to place clinical practica there. Whether that wording also reaches the online RN-to-BSN or the non-NP post-master's DNP isn't clear, so ask before you apply. See out-of-state clinicals for the other restricted states.

NYSED's registration rule for online programs

New York regulates this from its side too. The Office of the Professions at the State Education Department says an out-of-state or online nursing program must hold NYSED registration or approval first if it wants to place students in New York clinical rotations. The only exceptions are federal facilities of the VA and the U.S. Armed Forces. For NP students, the NP education program itself has to be registered.

NYSED's nurse practitioner FAQ is blunt: outside a registered NP program, doing NP rotations in New York “could also be illegal.” Its college evaluation office adds that a clinical placement in a licensed profession counts as a physical presence in the state and needs prior approval or an exemption, even for schools that belong to SARA.

What you can do if you live in New York

1. Ask Maryville, and keep the replyBefore applying, ask admissions whether it can enroll you from New York in your track, and save what it says.
2. Don't count on a clinic across the lineA site in New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Connecticut doesn't settle it. The 2020 bar is on enrolling students from New York, and the grid mark concerns licensure in New York.
3. Check registration for any program you weighIf you want NP clinicals in New York, the program must be NYSED-registered. The FAQ below explains how to check.

Licensing and practice in New York

No compact bill is pending in New York, which remains outside the Nurse Licensure Compact. NYSED is explicit that another state's multistate license doesn't reach practice in New York; nurses licensed elsewhere follow its checklist for a New York license. New York hasn't enacted the APRN Compact, which isn't operational anywhere yet.

AANP rates New York full practice, but conditionally. Until an NP has 3,600 practice hours, they need protocols and a written practice agreement with a collaborating physician. We found no New York preceptor incentive. The large systems, from Mount Sinai and NYC Health + Hospitals to Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian and UR Medicine in Rochester, all sit under the same NYSED rule, so a willing preceptor there doesn't change the answer for a Maryville NP student.
