Which side of the state line counts

For a New Jersey student, the grids draw a hard line at the New York border. Here is how the states around you read on the MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP grids.

New Jersey's Board and out-of-state programs

Our search of New Jersey Board of Nursing rules found none under which an out-of-state program must get approval, or file notice, ahead of placing students with New Jersey clinical sites. N.J.A.C. 13:37's first subchapter covers the Board's accreditation of programs whose institutions hold a license from New Jersey's Commission on Higher Education. As for section 13:37-1.10(c), its only subject is the reverse case: New Jersey programs that use clinical agencies in other states.

There's a gap in what we could check. The Board's website returned a security check that blocked our research, so any guidance posted there wasn't reviewed. Put the question to the Maryville Online Clinical Team before a New Jersey site signs anything.

Joint protocols and who can precept you

AANP rates New Jersey as reduced practice. To order medications and devices, NPs there keep joint protocols with a collaborating physician. That arrangement is ordinary in New Jersey and doesn't stop an NP from precepting.

Maryville decides eligibility, and its list is short: an APRN, MD or DO who holds board certification and an unencumbered license and has practiced for at least a year. Relatives, supervisors and close work colleagues are out. A board-certified physician who shares an NP's joint protocols can qualify as well, and PMHNP students can add LCSW, PsychD or PhD psychology preceptors; details on preceptor requirements.

Your license for New Jersey hours

November 15, 2021 marked New Jersey's implementation of the Nurse Licensure Compact. If your home state is a compact member, your unencumbered multistate license already reaches New Jersey clinics, which satisfies Maryville's license requirement. New Jersey hasn't enacted the APRN Compact.

Moving to New Jersey partway through changes things: Maryville wants the new address entered in Self-Service and a license from your new home state. A New York license doesn't carry into New Jersey, since New York isn't a compact member. More at RN license for clinicals.

Where New Jersey NP students look

Outside the New York metro's New Jersey portion, the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro holds about 1.4 million New Jersey residents, and the Trenton-Princeton (about 399,000) and Atlantic City-Hammonton (about 372,000) metros sit entirely in the state. Hackensack Meridian Health, Virtua Health, RWJBarnabas Health, Cooper University Health Care in Camden and Atlantic Health System are large systems in the state.
