Tracks you can complete from South Carolina

On the current curriculum each track runs 750 clinical hours across three practicums. Per Maryville's 2023 webinar, one preceptor can stay with an FNP or AGPCNP student from term to term, so a good South Carolina match in those tracks may cover more than one practicum.

Regulation 91-6, and the license you need

Under S.C. Code Regs. 91-6, a program with a parent institution in another state needs South Carolina Board of Nursing approval before running clinical experiences that lead students to initial licensure. Among the conditions: the program is fully approved in its home state; direct supervision on site and on shift comes from faculty holding a South Carolina or other compact-state license; there is a written clinical affiliation agreement; precepted experiences follow South Carolina rules; and any change in compliance is reported to the Board in writing within 15 days.

You already hold an RN license, and the regulation doesn't address APRN programs. No separate Board approval step for an out-of-state NP program appears in the sources, which is not the same as a ruling, so confirm with Maryville that nothing more is needed for your site.

Your license is simpler. South Carolina's Nurse Licensure Compact participation began January 19, 2018. Hold either a South Carolina license or a multistate license from your compact home state, and the clinical state is covered as Maryville requires. Practice agreements and who can precept you

In AANP's terms South Carolina is restricted: a practice agreement with a physician is what lets an NP perform delegated acts, and controlled-substance supply is limited. Every NP you ask works under an agreement with a physician, so one practice can offer two possible preceptors.

Both have to pass Maryville's preceptor rule. In practice that means a board-certified APRN, MD or DO with at least twelve months of experience, whose license in their practice state is unencumbered. The PMHNP track widens the pool to LCSWs and to psychologists holding a PsychD or PhD. Where board certification is missing, the route is the Preceptor Exception Form, which Maryville must approve.

The preceptor tax credit, and who can claim it

S.C. Code § 12-6-3800 gives physician, APRN and PA preceptors who work uncompensated an income tax credit per qualifying rotation, for up to four rotations a year, plus a deduction for up to six more. A 2024 act extended it through tax year 2029, though the Department of Revenue's Revenue Ruling #20-2 still shows the original January 1, 2026 repeal.

Conditions a preceptor must meet

• Precept at least two rotations a year, without pay
• Participate in Medicaid, with at least 100 Medicaid and Medicare patients combined
• Or practice in a clinic that serves patients without charge

Our sources don't say whether a rotation for an out-of-state program qualifies, so don't present the credit as settled; a preceptor should check with SCDOR before counting on it. Maryville itself doesn't pay preceptors.
