North Carolina NP clinicals for Maryville students
All five Maryville NP tracks are marked “Meets” for North Carolina on the June 2026 grids, and post-licensure graduate programs are neither approved nor disapproved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. What's left to settle is your license, a preceptor who fits Maryville's rule under the state's career-long physician agreements, and an ask with no state incentive behind it.

North Carolina isn't among the states Maryville's older 2020 status page restricts. The 2020 page also describes Maryville as an NC-SARA participant able to place clinical students in SARA member states, and North Carolina's Board ties clinical eligibility to SARA, as the next section explains.
A Board that stays out of graduate programs
Post-licensure graduate-level nursing programs, in-state or out-of-state, are ones the NCBON says it “does not approve or disapprove.” Its jurisdiction doesn't extend to RN-BSN, doctoral or post-licensure graduate programs.
You may come across an approval rule, 21 NCAC 36 .0233, but its subject is unlicensed students enrolled in out-of-state programs, not licensed RNs in NP tracks.
North Carolina has been a SARA member since June 2016, and the Board says students at a SARA-approved college may be eligible to do clinicals in the state while taking didactic courses from that college. Maryville's SARA participation comes from its 2020 page, so confirm with Maryville that nothing else is needed for your site.
If you don't hold a North Carolina or multistate license
The Board adds one step for graduate students. Master's or doctoral students who don't hold a North Carolina or multistate license must contact the NCBON Licensure Department, through its Email Us form, for the requirements to complete clinical experiences in the state.
Whether that applies depends on your license. Compact membership for North Carolina began January 19, 2018. That means a North Carolina license avoids the step, as does a multistate license issued by another compact state, and either also satisfies Maryville, which wants your license good in the state where the clinic is. If you hold only a single-state license issued elsewhere, contact the Board before you build a plan around a North Carolina site. The licensing page has more: RN license for clinicals.

Career-long physician agreements and your preceptor
AANP lists North Carolina as restricted: an NP's agreement with a physician lasts for their whole career, and NP licensure is regulated jointly by the Board of Nursing and the Medical Board through their Joint Subcommittee. Every NP preceptor you find practices under an agreement with a physician, who can also precept you if they meet Maryville's rule.
Maryville's test is the same everywhere: APRN, MD or DO; board certification; an unencumbered license in the practice state; a year or more of experience. PMHNP students can add an LCSW, PsychD or PhD in psychology. When you gather credentials for Exxat, confirm the NP's North Carolina NP licensure as well as the RN license. Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Winston-Salem
Those are North Carolina's largest metros on 2025 Census estimates; the Charlotte metro also reaches into South Carolina. Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, is based in Charlotte, and the state's other large systems include ECU Health and Duke Health as well as Novant Health and UNC Health. They're examples of where NP students look, not places known to take Maryville students.

Questions Maryville students ask
I'm moving to North Carolina partway through my Maryville program. What changes?
Two things, per the admitted-student welcome page: change your address in Self-Service, and get licensed for North Carolina. North Carolina is marked “Meets” for every NP track, so your track stays open. Plan the license before your next practicum, since your clinical site will be in North Carolina and your RN license must be valid in that state.
Can a North Carolina physician assistant precept me for Maryville?
Not as a rule. Maryville's February 2026 blog puts PAs among the clinicians who usually don't qualify, and the 2023 webinar went further, saying no specialty accepted them. In North Carolina, look instead to the physician in an NP's career-long agreement, who can precept if board certified with a year of experience.
Does the 30-day NCBON request apply to my Maryville clinicals?
Not as the sources describe it. Under 21 NCAC 36 .0233, the request goes in at least 30 days ahead, filed by an RN designee or by the chief nursing administrator of the North Carolina agency, and the rule applies to unlicensed students from out-of-state programs. Maryville's NP students already hold RN licenses, and according to the Board, post-licensure graduate programs fall outside its jurisdiction. A site that asks about it should hear from Maryville.
Can I use Duke or UNC Health if I already work there?
Possibly. Maryville permits an employer site when the placement doesn't conflict with your job, as long as you're off the clock during practicum time. Paid hours never count, and a supervisor or direct work colleague can't be your preceptor. Read employer clinical sites before you ask your manager.
