Virginia doesn't appear among the restrictions on Maryville's older 2020 status page, so the two sources agree here.

No Board filing for out-of-state programs

By the Virginia Board of Nursing's own statement, nursing education programs that are post-licensure or based out of state are not ones it regulates or approves. The Board has no approval process for a program from another state that sends students to Virginia sites. The Board's clinical-site approval rules (18VAC90-27) cover pre-licensure programs holding Virginia approval, a group that doesn't include Maryville's NP tracks.

That leaves Maryville's own process as the gate: your Exxat site and preceptor request, clearance from the site, sign-off from course faculty, and a signed MOU or the site's own contract. The steps are laid out in the Maryville clinical placement process.

Virginia's licensure exemption, and why to ask Maryville first

Va. Code § 54.1-3001 carves out an exemption from Virginia licensure for certain student RNs. To use it, you'd hold a current, unrestricted license issued by another state, by DC or by a U.S. territory, and be enrolled in an advanced professional nursing program with required clinical practice. Only the clinical practice your curriculum calls for is exempt.

Maryville's rule reads more strictly: its admitted-student welcome page wants your RN license to be valid, and unencumbered, in whatever state your patients are in. Its public pages don't say whether it accepts the Virginia exemption instead, so ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team before relying on it. The simpler route is to hold a Virginia license, or a multistate one issued by any compact state; Virginia's compact start date was January 19, 2018. See RN license for clinicals.

Patient care team physicians and the three-year attestation

AANP puts Virginia in its restricted category. A Virginia NP practices alongside a patient care team physician under a practice agreement, unless the NP attests to full-time clinical experience amounting to the equivalent of three years. Some Virginia NPs you approach practice under a physician agreement and some on their own attestation.

Either way, Maryville looks at credentials, not practice status: whoever precepts you needs APRN, MD or DO credentials, board certification, an unencumbered license in their practice state, and a year or more behind them. In a team practice, the physician is a second person to ask. If you're in the PMHNP track, an LCSW or a psychologist (PsychD or PhD) is also allowed. A preceptor lacking board certification goes through the Preceptor Exception Form.

NPIP pays preceptors of Virginia schools only

Virginia's Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program sends payments to RNs, LPNs, APRNs, PAs and physicians holding Virginia licenses for precepting students enrolled in a Virginia public or private nonprofit school of nursing. Payment follows a sliding scale tied to hours precepted each semester, from 25 up to 250, first come, first served. A preceptor who takes a Maryville student can't claim it for that rotation, because Maryville isn't a Virginia school.

The program changed hands in 2026. SB 405, signed on March 31, 2026, shifted the program away from the Virginia Department of Health. Its new home is the Virginia Nursing Workforce Center, which sits within the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority and accepts applications covering precepting hours finished July 1, 2026 or later. From the Washington suburbs to Roanoke

Virginia's share of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro is its largest population center on 2025 Census estimates, followed by Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk, Richmond and Roanoke. Sentara Health and Inova are among the large systems, along with VCU Health, UVA Health and Carilion Clinic. Treat the list as places to look rather than sites with any known Maryville arrangement.
