West Virginia sends graduate programs to its Higher Education Policy Commission rather than its nursing board, and that office wants approval only from programs outside NC-SARA or those sending 10 or more students to one site.

Two agencies, and which one covers Maryville
Only pre-licensure programs fall under the West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses. West Virginia facilities can't be used by an out-of-state pre-licensure program until it submits the Board's Out-of-State Prelicensure Nursing Education Program Approval Application. Graduate and advanced-degree programs are pointed elsewhere: to their national nursing accreditor and to WVHEPC, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
WVHEPC has an Office of Nursing Education and Workforce Development, and according to that office, an out-of-state APRN or graduate program needs the agency's approval for clinicals in West Virginia in just two cases: the institution is not an NC-SARA participant, or at least 10 of its students are placed at one site. Maryville's 2020 status page says it participates in NC-SARA. Only Maryville can see how many of its students are at one site, so if yours is a large one, ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team whether WVHEPC approval is needed.
The 10-student threshold counts Maryville students at one site, not just you, so a busy hospital is the case to ask about.
The license West Virginia expects
The same WVHEPC guide sets a license rule for APRN and graduate students doing clinicals in the state. Students whose primary state of residence is West Virginia need a valid West Virginia RN license; students living elsewhere need a multistate (eNLC) RN license. West Virginia's Nurse Licensure Compact start date was January 19, 2018.
The guide names only those two options, so a nurse whose only license is single-state, from a non-compact state, should check with Maryville. Maryville adds its own condition, a license valid in the clinical state, covered in RN license for clinicals.
Collaborative agreements and who can precept
West Virginia is a reduced-practice state in AANP's classification. NPs need a physician collaborative agreement for three years of prescriptive practice, and Schedule II narcotic prescriptions are capped at a three-day supply. A newer NP preceptor may still be inside that three-year window, with a collaborating physician you could also ask.
Maryville's bar sits apart from West Virginia's: its preceptors are APRNs, MDs or DOs with board certification, an unencumbered license in their practice state and a year or more of experience. PMHNP students can also look to LCSWs and to PsychD- or PhD-trained psychologists. Without board certification, a clinician needs an approved Preceptor Exception Form first. Charleston, Huntington, Martinsburg and Morgantown
On 2025 Census estimates, West Virginia's larger metro populations are in Charleston, the West Virginia side of Huntington-Ashland, the West Virginia side of Hagerstown-Martinsburg, and Morgantown. Systems NP students look at include WVU Medicine; Vandalia Health, whose members include CAMC (Charleston Area Medical Center), Mon Health System and Davis Health System; and Marshall Health Network. Nothing in our research says any of them takes Maryville students; they're names to start from.
Our research found no West Virginia preceptor incentive, and Maryville doesn't pay preceptors. Huntington's metro reaches into Kentucky and Ohio, and Martinsburg's into Maryland; a site across those lines follows that state's rules, as does one in Virginia.

My West Virginia site takes students from many schools. Does the 10-student rule apply?
The WVHEPC guide ties the threshold to the out-of-state institution itself sending at least 10 students to one site, so the count is Maryville's students there, not everyone the site hosts. You can't see Maryville's numbers, so ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team if your site is a large hospital.
I live in Ohio near Huntington. Can I do clinicals in West Virginia?
The WVHEPC guide says an APRN or graduate student whose primary state of residence isn't West Virginia needs a multistate RN license. Ohio implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2023, so an Ohio multistate license fits that rule. Maryville still approves the site and preceptor, and your preceptor needs a license valid in West Virginia.
Can a West Virginia NP with under three years of practice precept me?
Possibly. Maryville's floor is one year in practice, alongside board certification and an unencumbered license. An NP still in West Virginia's three-year collaborative period for prescribing isn't excluded by anything in our sources, but Maryville reviews every preceptor, and you should ask how prescribing is supervised at the practice.
Does the West Virginia RN Board need to approve Maryville?
Not for NP clinicals. The WV RN Board's regulation covers only pre-licensure programs, and it refers graduate programs to WVHEPC and their accreditor. Post-licensure programs aren't regulated by the RN Board, according to the state's Office of Nursing Education and Workforce Development.
