Finding a Georgia preceptor for your Maryville NP clinicals

All four June 2026 NP grids (MSN, certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP) mark Georgia “Meets” for each track, and Maryville's 2020-era status page places no limits on Georgia.

No Board approval step, but a licensure rule for everyone involved

The Georgia Board of Nursing has no approval or regulatory role over post-licensure programs, APRN programs among them. That means an MSN or NP program based in another state doesn't need the Board's sign-off before its students do clinicals in Georgia; the rules that matter here are about licensure.

If you live in Georgia and do clinical hours there for a program based elsewhere, you need either a Georgia license or another compact state's multistate license. That licensure rule also binds faculty and preceptors who teach or work in Georgia, whether they do it face to face or electronically. Georgia's compact membership took effect January 19, 2018. Maryville adds its own condition: an RN license good in your clinical site's state (more on licenses).

Who can precept you in a restricted-practice state

Georgia is a restricted state in AANP's listing. An NP there practices under physician delegation or supervision, with limits on Schedule II prescribing. Every Georgia NP you approach works under a physician's delegation, so one practice can hold two people worth asking. Ask a prospective NP preceptor how controlled-substance prescribing is handled there, so you know what you'll see.

Maryville's own rule takes APRNs, MDs and DOs with board certification, a year's experience and an unencumbered license where they work, and for PMHNP it adds licensed clinical social workers and PsychD- or PhD-holding psychologists. The Georgia Board, however, says that in post-licensure APRN programs, a nurse holding Georgia APRN authorization must conduct the clinical instruction.

Our sources don't say how those fit when the preceptor at a Georgia site is a physician or, for PMHNP, a non-nurse clinician. If your best lead is an MD, DO or LCSW, ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team whether that placement works before the clinician commits. PTIP, Georgia's preceptor tax credit

Under Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, preceptors licensed in Georgia as MDs or DOs, dentists, APRNs or PAs can take a state tax credit when they give uncompensated clinical training in community settings. The program was revised and extended by HB 144, according to Augusta University's AHEC page. For APRNs, each 160-hour rotation earns a credit, with a ceiling of 10 rotations per year and a statewide annual cap, and yearly registration is required starting in 2026.

Our research doesn't record whether a rotation for an out-of-state program like Maryville's qualifies. Don't promise the credit to a Georgia preceptor; point them to Georgia AHEC to check. Maryville itself doesn't pay preceptors, per its 2023 webinar. Tips for the ask: preceptor outreach.

Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta and Columbus

On 2025 Census estimates, metro Atlanta is by far Georgia's largest, followed by Savannah and the Georgia sides of the Augusta and Columbus metros. Among the large systems are Emory Healthcare and Grady Health System, along with Northside Hospital, Piedmont Healthcare and Wellstar Health System. We list them because NP students search there, not because any is known to accept Maryville students.

Two metros cross state lines: Augusta's extends into South Carolina, and Columbus's into Alabama. A site across either line follows that state's rules, and Alabama asks out-of-state APRN programs for a letter of intent first. See our Alabama and South Carolina guides.
