Maryville NP clinicals in Alabama: the letter of intent comes first

Every Maryville NP track is open in Alabama

Maryville's older 2020 status page doesn't restrict Alabama either. The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) adds a step of its own, and it falls on the program, not on you.

Alabama's letter of intent for out-of-state APRN programs

Programs based outside Alabama, prelicensure or advanced practice, owe the ABN a letter of intent plus approval documents no later than 15 days ahead of their first clinical learning experience in the state, per Ala. Admin. Code r. 610-X-3-.09.

What the submission to the ABN lists

• Each student's name and RN license number, Alabama or multistate
• Who the clinical supervisor is, with their license number
• The supervising faculty member's Alabama or multistate RN license number
• The facility, plus a statement from its CNO or Director of Nursing

On top of the letter, out-of-state programs owe a yearly fee. It's assessed per program or institution, can't be refunded and lasts one calendar year. The ABN bars students from Alabama clinicals until the Board has approved the program and the fee is paid.

Reduced practice, and who can precept you

AANP classifies Alabama as reduced practice. Every Alabama NP has a state-regulated collaborative agreement with a physician covering one or more elements of their work, and two boards share oversight of NPs: Alabama's Board of Medical Examiners along with its Board of Nursing. Each Alabama NP you contact comes paired with a physician, and either one could precept you.

Maryville's preceptor rule is the filter. It admits APRNs, MDs and DOs who are board certified, have practiced a year or longer and hold an unencumbered license in the state where they practice; PAs and CRNAs don't typically qualify. PMHNP students have two more options, an LCSW or a psychologist with a PsychD or PhD, and a clinician lacking board certification can be considered only through an approved Preceptor Exception Form. The ABN letter carries your supervisor's license number, so verify it early.

Why APTIP won't cover a Maryville rotation

The Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office administers the Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program (APTIP), a state income tax credit for community-based preceptors who are uncompensated and work in medically underserved rural areas. NPs earn it per 160-hour rotation, up to 12 a year; the Alabama Department of Revenue shows it running from tax year 2024 until September 29, 2031.

It counts only for rotations supporting eligible Alabama programs, meaning institutions physically located in Alabama. Maryville is in Missouri, so a preceptor can't claim APTIP for your rotation. Say so up front, since a rural NP who already takes Alabama students may assume otherwise. Maryville doesn't pay preceptors either, per its 2023 webinar.

Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery

Those are Alabama's four largest metros on 2025 Census estimates, each with a big system: UAB Medicine in Birmingham, Baptist Health in Montgomery, the Huntsville Hospital Health System in its home city, and in Mobile both Infirmary Health and USA Health, the University of South Alabama's academic health system. Treat them as examples of where NP students look, not as sites known to take Maryville students.

Whatever the site, its Director of Nursing or CNO has to supply a statement for the ABN letter, and Maryville needs a signed MOU or the site's own contract. Ask early who at the facility handles both.

Your RN license for Alabama clinicals

The ABN's FAQ covers post-licensure students, MSN and DNP included: for clinicals in Alabama you need either an unencumbered, valid Alabama RN license or a party state's multistate license. Alabama's Nurse Licensure Compact membership dates to January 1, 2020. Either one satisfies Maryville, which asks that your license cover the state where the clinic sits; see RN license for clinicals. Alabama hasn't enacted the separate APRN Compact.
