Maryville NP clinicals in North Dakota: recognition before the first hour

Every NP track is marked “Meets” for North Dakota

Maryville's 2020 status page, still online, restricts New York, Louisiana, Oregon and Washington and says nothing about North Dakota. That page also says Maryville participates in NC-SARA, which is relevant here: NDBON asks for proof of NC-SARA approval, or of authorization or exemption from the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education, before it recognizes a distance program.

NDBON's recognition rule for distance APRN programs

NDBON uses “pre-licensure” broadly, defining it as leading to LPN, RN or APRN licensure, so an NP program placing students in North Dakota facilities falls under its distance-education recognition. Programs must submit the request 60 days ahead of planned student activity, and an annual fee applies to graduate programs. State law matches: NDCC 43-12.1-04(12) exempts students of a board-recognized, out-of-state program once there is “written notification to the board,” contingent on clinical site availability.

What a recognized program files each semester, before any student activity

• Names of students and their North Dakota or compact license information
• Which facilities and courses are involved
• Names and resumes of preceptors and faculty, with their North Dakota or compact licenses
• The affiliation agreements
• Confirmation from each facility that it has clinical space

North Dakota NPs practice independently: who can precept you

AANP classifies North Dakota as full practice, with no transition-period note in our research. An experienced North Dakota NP practices on their own license, so you can ask an NP directly rather than working through a collaborating physician.

Maryville's preceptor rule is the real filter. It asks for an APRN, MD or DO with board certification, an unencumbered license in the state of practice and a year or more of experience. Physician assistants and CRNAs generally aren't accepted. For PMHNP, an LCSW, PsychD or PhD in psychology can also qualify; a clinician who isn't board certified goes through an approved Preceptor Exception Form. Because NDBON's semester filing carries each preceptor's resume and license, ask for both when your preceptor says yes.

Your license: the NLC now, the APRN Compact later

North Dakota's Nurse Licensure Compact participation went live on January 19, 2018. Either a North Dakota RN license or your home compact state's multistate license satisfies Maryville's rule that your license be valid where you see patients, and it's the license information NDBON's filing asks for. North Dakota also enacted the APRN Compact, in March 2021. It gives you nothing to use yet. As of 2026 it has just five enacting states (Delaware, Utah, Wyoming and both Dakotas), and it needs seven before it can operate.

Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks and Minot

North Dakota's population clusters in four metros. Fargo is the largest, with about 202,000 of its 270,000 residents on the North Dakota side; Sanford Health runs Sanford Broadway Medical Center there, and Essentia Health, which serves Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, has Essentia Health-Fargo. Bismarck has Sanford Medical Center Bismarck and CHI St. Alexius Health, part of CommonSpirit. Altru Health System is in Grand Forks and Trinity Health in Minot.

These systems show where NP students in the state tend to search. None is known to take Maryville students. A North Dakota facility you approach has to verify clinical space for NDBON's filing and sign Maryville's MOU or its own contract, so find out early who at the facility handles both.
