Maryville NP clinicals in Minnesota: full practice, outside the compact

Minnesota is open for every Maryville NP track

Minnesota earns a “Meets” in every NP column (FNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, PMHNP, PNP) on all four June 2026 grids: MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP. Maryville's 2020 status page leaves Minnesota off its restricted list.

We also found no step in which the Minnesota Board of Nursing approves out-of-state programs. According to the Board, the programs it must approve are those “conducted in Minnesota,” and for purposes of the student exemption, its rules count a U.S. or Canadian program as Board-approved when its own state has approved it. That leaves your license as the main Minnesota question.

Four answers to the license question

Being outside the compact, Minnesota doesn't honor multistate licenses issued elsewhere. What replaces one depends on whose rule you read.

The statute may cover you, but Maryville's rule and large sites may not accept it in place of a Minnesota license. Ask Maryville how it applies its rule here before you rely on the exemption; see RN license for clinicals.

Full practice, and who can precept you

AANP gives Minnesota a full-practice rating, which applies once an NP has logged 2,080 or more hours under a collaborative agreement with an APRN or physician. An experienced Minnesota NP may practice with no physician agreement at all, and that doesn't affect Maryville's test: an APRN, MD or DO who is board certified, unencumbered and at least one year into practice.

One timing point matters. An NP still inside that 2,080-hour transition is newer to practice, so check that they meet Maryville's one-year minimum before you ask. Maryville's PMHNP track also allows LCSW, PsychD and PhD psychology preceptors; see preceptor requirements.

MERC funds Minnesota sites, not your preceptor

Through its Medical Education and Research Costs (MERC) program, the Minnesota Department of Health pays Minnesota clinical training sites back for a portion of their accredited clinical training costs. Under Minn. Stat. 62J.692, eligible training includes nurse practitioners and other APRNs. It isn't a payment to individual preceptors.

Under MERC's eligibility criteria, the training site and the accredited teaching program must both be located in Minnesota. Maryville is in Missouri, so a Maryville placement doesn't fit that test, and Maryville doesn't pay preceptors either. For what you can offer instead, see asking a preceptor.

Twin Cities, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud

The Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington metro holds about 3.65 million Minnesotans in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate. Next come Duluth, with about 237,000 people on the Minnesota side, then Rochester at about 231,000 and St. Cloud at about 206,000. Among the large systems are HealthPartners, Essentia Health, Mayo Clinic, M Health Fairview and Allina Health. Treat these as illustrations, not as sites known to take Maryville students.
