Maryville NP clinicals in Alaska: you register, not just the school

Which Maryville tracks you can finish from Alaska

The open question in Alaska is timing: your Board registration, a qualifying preceptor and a signed site agreement all have to land before the practicum starts.

The APRN Preceptorship Registration, step by step

According to the Board's FAQ, an APRN-program student “must apply for a preceptorship with the Alaska Board of Nursing.” The rule behind it, 12 AAC 44.460, has the Board register an applicant whose clinical practice is part of an APRN course of study based outside Alaska. It's an individual student registration, not an approval of Maryville's program.

1. Check your RN licenseThe registration requires an RN license in good standing, issued by Alaska or another state.
2. Get proof of enrollmentYou show current enrollment in an APRN program; ask Maryville which office provides it.
3. Secure the preceptorship agreementBecause the Board asks for a copy of the school-facility-student-preceptor agreement, get it signed before you apply.
4. File form 08-4253Expect a non-refundable fee with the APRN Preceptorship Registration form.
5. Track the expiryThe registration ends at 12 months or when the preceptorship does, whichever is sooner. One renewal is allowed.

Full practice, and Alaska's own preceptor test

AANP classifies Alaska as full practice. The Board's registration form sets its own bar for your preceptor: they must hold an active, unencumbered APRN or physician license or privilege to practice, have a practice focus comparable to yours, and take on the work of supervising, teaching and evaluating you at the clinical site.

Maryville's preceptor rule overlaps but adds board certification and at least a year of experience, and it usually excludes PAs and CRNAs. One tension is specific to Alaska: Maryville lets PMHNP students use an LCSW, PsychD or PhD in psychology, while Alaska's form names only APRNs and physicians. Confirm with Maryville before you build a PMHNP rotation around a counselor or psychologist there.

Outside the Nurse Licensure Compact

Alaska is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. According to the Board's compact page, no bill to join has passed the legislature; the page lists HB 131 and SB 124 of the 2025–2026 session as pending. Nor has Alaska enacted the APRN Compact.

That leaves a gap to close early. Alaska's registration accepts an RN license from any state, Alaska included. Maryville, however, wants your license to be valid where you see patients, and a multistate license from home carries no privilege in a non-compact state. Ask Maryville whether it wants an Alaska RN license for your placement before you apply; RN license for clinicals covers the Maryville side.

One rule falls on Maryville's faculty: under 12 AAC 44.090(h), out-of-state faculty grading clinical coursework in Alaska need an Alaska RN license once that work, plus other nursing education or consultation there, passes 20 working days in a licensing period.

Anchorage, Palmer, Fairbanks and Juneau

About 406,000 people live in the Anchorage metro. Hospitals there include HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital, the tribal Alaska Native Medical Center, and Providence Alaska Medical Center, run by Providence, the largest hospital operator in Alaska. Palmer has Mat-Su Regional Medical Center. In the Fairbanks-College metro, about 94,000 people, Foundation Health Partners runs Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Tanana Valley Clinic. Juneau is a micropolitan area of about 32,000.

Read the list as examples of where NP students search, not sites known to host Maryville students. Because the Board wants an agreement signed by school, facility, student and preceptor, ask early whether Maryville's MOU or the facility's own contract serves that purpose or a separate preceptorship agreement is needed.
