Maryville NP clinicals in Hawaii: a Hawaii license, and a question to ask

Maryville's 2020 status page, still live, names four restricted states, and Hawaii isn't one. The grids settle whether the program counts toward Hawaii licensure, not how the Hawaii Board treats clinicals from a Missouri-based program.

What the Hawaii Board says, and what it leaves open

Hawaii's nurse practice law exempts only students in nursing programs accredited by the Hawaii Board: HRS 457-13(2) allows nursing “incidental to their program of study” for them. In September 2016 the Board's Education Committee agreed that an out-of-state program (a North Dakota BSN program) could not place a pre-licensure student in Hawaii for clinicals.

Post-licensure programs get different treatment. Per the Board's FAQ, an out-of-state, online or distance post-licensure program with no Hawaii campus isn't Board-approved, files no application and needn't notify it. The FAQ's examples are LPN-to-RN and RN-to-BSN. Program faculty need a Hawaii license only when physically teaching or precepting a student there.

Full practice, and who qualifies to precept

AANP classifies Hawaii as full practice, so an experienced Hawaii NP precepts on their own license with no physician agreement behind them. Maryville's preceptor rule still sets the bar: an APRN, MD or DO, board certified, with an unencumbered license where they practice and at least a year of experience. PMHNP students may add an LCSW, PsychD or PhD in psychology.

Maryville also rules out your own healthcare provider, relatives, a direct supervisor or report, and direct work colleagues. If one of the systems below employs you, look outside your own unit and read clinicals at your employer first.

Hawaii's preceptor tax credit and out-of-state students

HRS 235-110.25, enacted through Act 43 of 2018, sets up the Hawaii Healthcare Preceptor Income Tax Credit: a nonrefundable credit against state income tax for each volunteer supervised clinical training rotation, with a yearly limit per preceptor. It applies to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2018, and neither Form N-358 (revised 2025) nor the program FAQ states an end date.

Conditions in Form N-358's instructions

• The preceptor is a physician or osteopathic physician, an APRN or a pharmacist
• They are a Hawaii resident with a primary care practice in Hawaii
• The rotation is uncompensated, meaning the preceptor isn't paid for it
• The Hawaii Department of Health certifies the rotation, subject to a yearly statewide limit of 1,500 credits

Maryville doesn't pay preceptors, so its rotations are uncompensated. The instructions in our research don't say whether a rotation for an out-of-state program like Maryville's can be certified, so send an interested preceptor to the Department of Health rather than promising the credit, and note the primary care condition if they work in acute or psychiatric care. Your license: Hawaii-issued only

Hawaii isn't a Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdiction, and our research found no pending legislation to join. Your home state's multistate RN license carries no privilege to practice in Hawaii, so Maryville's rule that your license be valid where you see patients calls for a Hawaii-issued one. Hawaii hasn't enacted the APRN Compact, which had five enacting states as of 2026 and needs seven to operate.

Honolulu, Kahului-Wailuku and Hilo-Kailua

Urban Honolulu, with nearly a million people, is by far the state's largest metro. The Kahului-Wailuku metro has about 161,000 residents and the Hilo-Kailua micropolitan area about 210,000. Systems on NP students' lists in Hawaii include The Queen's Health Systems and Hawaii Pacific Health (Straub, Wilcox, Kapiolani and Pali Momi), along with the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation and Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.

Those names are examples, not sites known to take Maryville students. Ask any facility early whether it will sign Maryville's MOU or use its own contract, since one of the two must be in place before Maryville approves the site.
