Maryville NP clinicals in Texas: open grids, restricted practice
Maryville's June 2026 licensure grids mark Texas “Meets” for all five NP tracks, and the Texas Board of Nursing's approval requirement for out-of-state programs is aimed at pre-licensure programs, not graduate NP programs like Maryville's. The Nurse Licensure Compact has covered Texas since January 2018. What makes a Texas search harder is a restricted-practice environment and no state incentive that reaches NP preceptors.

Where Texas stands on Maryville's grids
Texas carries no Maryville restriction. Every NP row on all four June 2026 program grids reads “Meets” for Texas, and the 2020 status page doesn't mention the state.

The Texas BON's out-of-state rule is for pre-licensure programs
Texas does make some out-of-state programs get approval. Out-of-state vocational and professional RN programs need Texas Board of Nursing approval before any clinical learning experience in Texas, whether or not the school is in NC-SARA, per Education Guideline 3.1.3 in its May 1, 2026 revision and 22 TAC 214.3(e) and its counterpart 215.3(e). The rule covers diploma, ADN, BSN and entry-level master's programs. Graduate APRN programs fall outside the BON's out-of-state approval rules, so on our research a Maryville NP placement in Texas doesn't wait on one. Confirm with Maryville anyway.
Texas's standard for APRN programs, 22 TAC 219.10, allows preceptors who are licensed APRNs, or other licensed health professionals with the ability to supervise and teach, and requires written program-preceptor-agency agreements. That chapter governs APRN programs seeking Texas BON approval. For you, Maryville's narrower rule is the one that counts: an APRN, MD or DO who holds board certification and has practiced at least a year, as laid out on preceptor requirements.
Restricted practice, and no incentive for your preceptor
AANP rates Texas restricted practice. In Texas, NPs practice under a physician's delegation and supervision, maintain written protocols with a physician throughout their careers, and are limited by setting in Schedule II prescribing. That relationship doesn't disqualify an NP as your preceptor, and a board-certified delegating physician can qualify too.
No Texas incentive reaches a preceptor who takes a Maryville NP student. The state's tuition exemption for clinical preceptors covers Texas-resident RNs precepting undergraduate pre-licensure students at public programs, not graduate NP students. THECB's Statewide Preceptorship Program funds medical students with physician preceptors, and its Nursing Shortage Reduction Program is an institutional grant to Texas nursing programs, not a payment to individual preceptors. Maryville says it doesn't pay preceptors either, so your ask rests on your preparation and schedule; see asking a preceptor.
License and where to look
January 19, 2018 is the Texas start date for the Nurse Licensure Compact. A multistate license that is unencumbered, as Maryville requires, and issued by your compact home state covers Texas clinicals. Texas hasn't enacted the APRN Compact.
Four Texas metros each passed 2.5 million residents in 2025 Census Bureau estimates: Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands and San Antonio-New Braunfels. Texas Health Resources, Houston Methodist, Baylor Scott & White Health, University Health in San Antonio and UT Southwestern Medical Center are among the large systems. I live in Louisiana. Can I do my Maryville clinicals in Texas?
If you're an FNP student, possibly. Maryville's grids mark Louisiana “Meets” for FNP, a Texas site falls under Texas rules rather than Louisiana's Board approval, and a multistate license issued by Louisiana covers Texas. For AGPCNP, AGACNP, PMHNP and PNP, the grids mark Louisiana “Does not meet,” and a Texas clinic doesn't change that. See our Louisiana guide.
Is a compact license enough for Maryville clinicals in Texas?
Yes, provided the license is multistate, unencumbered and from your compact home state. Texas entered the Nurse Licensure Compact in January 2018, and Maryville requires a valid license in the state where you see patients. With nothing but a single-state license from a non-compact state, you'd have to get a Texas license first.
Must Maryville appear on the Texas BON's approved list for out-of-state programs?
The BON posts which out-of-state programs it has approved to run clinical learning experiences in Texas. That approval process, though, was designed for pre-licensure programs rather than graduate APRN programs. A graduate NP program's absence from the list wouldn't, on its own, signal a problem. If a Texas site's education office raises the list, pass the question to the Maryville Online Clinical Team.
Can a Texas preceptor claim a tax credit for teaching NP students?
We found no Texas preceptor tax credit. The state's preceptor tuition exemption applies only to Texas-resident RNs precepting undergraduate students preparing for initial RN licensure at public programs, so it doesn't reach someone precepting a Maryville NP student. Be upfront about that when you ask.
