Maryville NP clinicals in Michigan start with a Michigan RN license

Michigan on Maryville's grids, track by track

Michigan is open on all four June 2026 grids: MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP with an NP concentration and BSN-to-DNP. Maryville's 2020 status page is silent on Michigan too. What changes from track to track is who Maryville lets precept you.

Each must be board certified, hold an unencumbered license and be a year or more into their role. A preceptor who lacks board certification can only be used through an approved Preceptor Exception Form.

Getting licensed in Michigan

Maryville requires your RN license to be unencumbered and valid in whichever state your patients are in. Because Michigan isn't a member, a multistate license from Ohio, Indiana or any other member state gives you no privilege to practice there, so plan on a Michigan license before your first hour.

Restricted practice and checking a Michigan NP

AANP rates Michigan as restricted practice because an NP needs physician delegation to prescribe controlled substances. That delegation is part of normal Michigan practice and doesn't disqualify an NP from precepting you.

Michigan's licensing structure helps with Maryville's board-certification rule. Only someone with both a current Michigan RN license and national certification from a certifying body the Board recognizes can receive NP specialty certification from the state, so a Michigan NP's specialty certification points to the national credential Maryville wants. Out-of-state programs: no Board step on record

Our research located no Michigan Board of Nursing rule, and no guidance, obliging an out-of-state program to seek approval or notify the Board ahead of Michigan clinicals. The Board's program-approval rules begin at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301; together with its Nursing Education Programs page, they address programs located within Michigan. For licensure, Michigan recognizes out-of-state programs through ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation rather than Board approval.

Michigan's preceptor pilot has ended

Michigan has tested paying preceptors. The MDHHS Office of Nursing Programs and the Michigan State University College of Nursing ran a Clinical Preceptor Pilot that paid incentives to preceptors of MSU FNP and PMHNP students, based on the hours they committed over two semesters. MDHHS lists the pilot as completed, and it covered MSU students only, so it offers nothing to someone precepting a Maryville student.
