Maryville NP clinicals in Utah: approval first, a report every August
No Maryville NP track is closed in Utah on the June 2026 grids. Utah's rule for out-of-state programs, R156-31b-609, asks the program to satisfy the Division and Board before placing students, to use preceptors licensed in Utah or a compact state, and to file a report by August 1 each year. Those duties are Maryville's, so confirm with Maryville that it has met them.

Each of Maryville's four grids, from the MSN to the BSN-to-DNP, lists Utah as “Meets” for every concentration, and Utah never comes up on the 2020 status page. What varies by track is who can precept you.

What R156-31b-609 asks of Maryville
Graduate and pre-licensure programs are treated alike under this Utah rule, which reaches any nursing school from another state that sends students for practicum or clinical work at a Utah agency or institution. Before placing anyone, the school must satisfy both the Board and the Division of Professional Licensing on several points.
What the program has to show
- Approval from its home-state nursing board, plus accreditation by a nursing accreditor with US Department of Education recognition
- Faculty who work for the program, meet home-state and accreditor standards, and hold an affiliation with an institution of higher education
- For any faculty member supervising students face to face, a Utah or compact-state license that is in good standing
- A plan showing how the program chooses and then oversees its clinical sites and its faculty or preceptors
By August 1 each year, the program must also give the Board a count of the students it placed in Utah facilities, proof that its accreditation is current, and an attestation that its preceptors and clinical faculty who supervise face to face hold Utah or other compact-state licenses. Full practice, plus a license test for every preceptor
AANP rates Utah full practice, with no condition in our research, so Utah NPs practice without a physician agreement and an NP-owned clinic can take you on directly. Maryville still sets the floor: board certification, an unencumbered license where the preceptor practices, at least a year of experience, and no relatives, supervisors or your own provider.
Utah adds a line of its own. When a program from another state places you in Utah, your preceptor must be in good standing on a license from Utah or from a Nurse Licensure Compact member state. Check your preceptor against that as well as Maryville's list, and if your preceptor is an MD, DO, LCSW or psychologist, ask Maryville how the rule is read for them. Two compacts, only one in force
Utah's part in the Nurse Licensure Compact began on January 19, 2018. So an unencumbered multistate RN license from another compact state covers the Utah patients you see, and validity where you see patients is exactly what Maryville's license rule asks for. A license good in only one non-compact state doesn't reach Utah. See RN license for clinicals.
On March 24, 2022, Utah enacted the APRN Compact as well, though it isn't running yet. Seven enactments are needed and only five exist so far, from Utah, Wyoming, Delaware and the two Dakotas. Until then, NP licenses stay state by state.

Questions Maryville students ask
Does Maryville need Utah's approval before my clinicals there can start?
In effect, yes. Under Utah Admin. Code R156-31b-609, a nursing program from another state first has to satisfy the Division and Board on home-state approval, accreditation, faculty and a supervision plan, and only then can it place students in Utah agencies or institutions. Maryville's status under the rule isn't on its public pages, so ask the Maryville Online Clinical Team.
What does Utah's August 1 report mean for me?
It's Maryville's paperwork, not yours. The report states how many students were placed in Utah facilities, verifies accreditation, and attests that the faculty and preceptors working with students face to face hold Utah or compact-state licenses. Your part is making sure the preceptor's license details in your Exxat request are accurate and current, because Maryville vouches for preceptor licensure in that report.
Is a compact RN license enough for Maryville clinicals in Salt Lake City?
For the licensing piece, yes, if your compact home state issued it as an unencumbered multistate license. Utah put the Nurse Licensure Compact into effect in January 2018, and Maryville wants a license valid where you see patients. One from a single non-compact state doesn't cover Utah. The site and preceptor still need Maryville's four approvals in Exxat.
Will the APRN Compact let me work as an NP in Utah and Wyoming on one license?
Not yet. Utah enacted the APRN Compact in March 2022 and Wyoming has too, but it takes seven enactments for the compact to begin operating, and only five states had enacted it as of 2026. Until then, NP licensure stays state by state, so plan on a Utah APRN license if you'll practice here after you certify. Your RN license for clinicals is a separate matter.
