Maryville NP clinicals in Maryland: a preceptor tax credit with conditions
On Maryville's June 2026 grids, every NP track shows “Meets” for Maryland. The state gives NP and physician preceptors a credit against state income tax through June 2030, but the law ties it to students in programs the Maryland Board of Nursing recognizes, and Maryville's standing is unconfirmed. We found no Board rule telling out-of-state schools to get approval before clinicals begin.

Maryland on Maryville's licensure grids
No Maryville concentration is off-limits in Maryland. The MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP grids dated June 2026 all show “Meets” for the five concentrations, and nothing on the 2020 status page limits Maryland. New York and Louisiana, where the grids do restrict tracks, are covered on out-of-state clinicals.
The NP preceptorship tax credit, and whether it reaches your preceptor
Under Tax-General §10-739, the Nurse Practitioner Preceptorship Tax Credit lets NPs and licensed physicians reduce their Maryland income tax for unpaid teaching of NP students in a Board of Nursing-approved preceptorship. The Maryland Department of Health awards it per rotation, with a yearly limit for each preceptor and a statewide annual cap, and Chapter 416 of 2025 keeps it in force to June 30, 2030.
What a preceptor has to show
- Three rotations or more, none shorter than 90 hours
- Community-based clinical training
- A location the Maryland Department of Health has identified as a health care workforce shortage area
- No pay for precepting, in a Board of Nursing-approved preceptorship
As the law defines them, eligible students are NP students in a nursing program the State Board of Nursing recognizes. Maryville's standing under that wording is unconfirmed, so a preceptor shouldn't assume your rotation earns the credit. Maryville says it doesn't pay clinical preceptors, which fits the unpaid condition. No Board approval step found, and an exemption for graduate students
Our search of Maryland Board of Nursing rules found no step requiring out-of-state programs to win approval before placing students here. The Board's nursing-education page raises schools from other states only for licensure, linking a substantial-equivalency tool plus lists of out-of-state prelicensure programs, approved and non-approved. The answer isn't settled, so check with Maryville.
NP students do appear in Maryland's Nurse Practice Act. Health Occ. §8-301(d)(2) exempts from licensure “a student enrolled in a graduate level accredited program for advanced practice registered nursing” while practicing in that program. The exemption covers APRN licensure only; Maryville separately requires an RN license that is valid in whichever state your patients are in.
Under COMAR 13B.05.01.02, schools based outside Maryland need Maryland Higher Education Commission registration to enroll Maryland residents online, unless they are approved to take part in SARA. Maryville's 2020 status page names it an NC-SARA participant.
After graduation: the Board's NP program approval
Before the Maryland Board certifies anyone as an advanced practice nurse, it says, their NP program must pass Board review and approval. When a program is missing from the Board-approved list, the school, rather than the applicant, files the Program Approval Form. If you plan to work as an NP in Maryland, ask Maryville well before your last term whether your concentration is on that list.
Practice rules, preceptors and your license
AANP's ratings list Maryland as full practice, and NPs there must declare 18 months of mentorship under a certified NP or a physician. Maryville's rule for your preceptor is separate: a board-certified APRN, MD or DO whose license is unencumbered and who has practiced for at least a year. Maryland's compact membership began January 19, 2018. An RN holding a multistate privilege may work in Maryland under its law (COMAR 10.27.01.03(B)), so your compact home state's multistate license meets Maryville's rule. In 2025 the Census Bureau estimated the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson metro at about 2.9 million residents, and around 2.5 million other Marylanders call the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro home. Do I need a Maryland RN license for Maryville clinicals in Maryland?
No, as long as the license from your compact home state is multistate. Maryland has been in the compact since January 2018, and its regulations let RNs holding a multistate privilege practice there under Maryland law. If you live in Maryland, your Maryland license is your home-state license. Maryville wants it unencumbered and valid where your patients are.
Will Maryland certify me as an NP after I finish at Maryville?
It hinges on the Board's review of your program. The Maryland Board says each NP program is reviewed and approved before its graduates are certified; if yours isn't listed, the school files the Program Approval Form. Ask Maryville before graduation whether your concentration is on Maryland's list, so your application isn't held up.
Does Maryville have to register with Maryland to enroll me online?
Registration applies to schools outside SARA. A school from another state generally needs Maryland Higher Education Commission registration to enroll Marylanders online, but schools approved for SARA participation are exempt. Maryville's status page, last updated in 2020, says it participates in NC-SARA. Ask Maryville to confirm for your start term.
