Where Maine sits on Maryville's grids

Maine carries no Maryville restriction. In June 2026, Maryville's MSN, post-master's certificate, DNP-NP and BSN-to-DNP grids all marked Maine “Meets” in every NP concentration, and the older 2020 status page, which limits four other states, doesn't mention Maine. Students in every concentration can plan Maine clinicals, subject to Maryville's approvals.

Maine's Board on out-of-state programs: nothing we could find

The Maine State Board of Nursing's education rule is Chapter 7, which carries the title Regulations for Approval of Prelicensure Nursing Education Programs. Its subject is approval of Maine's own prelicensure programs; it says nothing about out-of-state clinical placements, and no such guidance is linked from the Board's education pages or rules list.

There is a carve-out in the Nurse Practice Act, 32 MRSA §2103(2), for students of board-approved programs “leading to initial licensure,” and an RN in a graduate program doesn't fit that description. Whether Maryville has any Maine step to complete for NP placements isn't in our research, so confirm with Maryville before you commit to a site and keep its answer with your records.

Full practice after 24 supervised months

AANP rates Maine full practice. There are two routes to it for an NP: at least 24 months of practice supervised by a physician or NP, or working for a clinic or hospital where a physician serves as medical director. Neither route decides whether an NP can precept you. What Maryville checks is the credential (APRN, MD or DO), board certification, an unencumbered license and one year or more in practice.

On the psychiatric track, Maryville also allows an LCSW, PsychD or PhD psychologist. Check the exclusions (relatives, supervisors, direct colleagues, your own provider) on preceptor requirements before you ask someone you know. We found no Maine preceptor tax credit or grant.

Your license under the compact

Maine brought the Nurse Licensure Compact into force on January 19, 2018. If your home state issued you a multistate license, it lets you practice as an RN in Maine, which meets Maryville's rule; if you live in Maine, your Maine license is that home-state license. 1. Pick your metroPortland-South Portland is Maine's largest metro, at about 578,000 people in the Census Bureau's 2025 estimate; Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn follow. Decide how far you can drive for a full term of clinical days.
2. List systems and practicesLarge systems where NP students look include Central Maine Healthcare and MaineHealth, plus MaineGeneral Health and Northern Light Health. Treat them as starting points; none is known to host Maryville students.
3. Match the setting to your trackMaryville's older guidance steers FNP, AGPCNP and PNP students to primary or preventive care settings and AGACNP students to hospitalist-type work. The FNP preceptor guide covers the most common case.
4. Ask Maryville the Maine questionExxat access arrives roughly three to four months before your first clinical term; raise the Maine question with the Online Clinical Team before then.
5. Submit and wait for all four approvalsSend the site and preceptor request in Exxat. Compliance, the request itself, clearance from the site and sign-off from course faculty must all be in place before day one.
