Maryville NP clinicals in California: the BRN's rules come first

Maryville's grid says yes; California adds conditions

California isn't one of Maryville's restricted states. All four of Maryville's June 2026 NP program grids show “Meets” in every California row, and the 2020 status page lists no California limit. That “Meets” speaks to Maryville's program; it doesn't settle the state's own conditions for clinicals. The restricted states are covered in out-of-state clinicals.

The BRN's approval rule for out-of-state NP programs

16 CCR § 1486 requires a nurse practitioner program based outside California to win approval from the Board of Registered Nursing before any of its students start clinicals in the state. The program has to follow NONPF and AACN standards, cover California NP law, including its standardized procedure rules, and choose preceptors who satisfy the Board's requirements. To begin, the program submits a Verification of Clinical Practice Experience form to the BRN, which decides on it during one of its meetings. For every preceptor in California, the program keeps an NP Program Preceptor form on file.

Preceptors, protocols and practice

California sets its own bar for preceptors of out-of-state NP students. Each must be qualified in your NP category and hold an active, valid California license for their own profession. They receive an orientation from the program and an evaluation by faculty at least once every two years, and their role is spelled out in writing, in an agreement that the agency and the program enter with the preceptor. Maryville adds its own filter on top: APRN, MD or DO only, board certified, and at least one year of experience (preceptor requirements).

AANP rates California restricted practice. For select settings and procedures, a standardized protocol agreement governs NP work, although some exemptions may apply. That's the California NP law the BRN expects out-of-state programs to teach.

Your California RN license

No compact bill is pending in California, which isn't a Nurse Licensure Compact member. That means a multistate license issued elsewhere won't cover a California clinical. Under 16 CCR § 1486(d), participating in clinicals there takes a California RN license, active and valid, for any student in an NP program based outside California. That lines up with Maryville's existing rule: your license has to be valid in the clinic's state. The same California RN license is a prerequisite for California NP certification once you graduate, and California has no APRN Compact law. Among metros, the four largest are Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim and San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, along with San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont and Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario. Large systems include Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, University of California Health (UC Davis, UC San Diego, UCI, UCLA, UCR and UCSF), Stanford Health Care and Cedars-Sinai.
